Career Education – Annemarie Holmyard

Year 11:

Year 11 students have been working toward the VCAL Numeracy Learning Outcome 5 – Preparing for Work where they have been learning about tax, payslips and financial literacy related to work. This has included a webinar where the students in SMN interacted with a member of the Australian Tax Office to learn about filing a tax return, obtaining a tax file number and superannuation.  The students have also learnt how to read a payslip and calculate earnings and fill in work related forms.

Science – Sam Hutson

This term Secondary 11/12 students in the ‘Mythbusters #2’ Elective have participated in a project based program. Students have worked in small groups to create a class Kahoot quiz to help teach Concord School students about safety in science. Both classes tested each Kahoot quiz and gave constructive feedback to make improvements. In addition to this project, students have also participated in three teacher chosen myths including; Can you put a pencil through a plastic bag without it leaking?, Can you put a straw through a potato? And Does mint really make your mouth cold? They have also worked in groups to research potential myths that they will be able to investigate next term.

Outdoor Education – Donna Thomas

Students participated in a rock climbing program. The first three weeks the students went to Latitude in Heidelberg. This indoor activity centre gave the students the chance to learn and practice a wide variety of manmade handholds which allowed them to learn and practice different rock climbing skills. In the last six weeks of term the students had the opportunity to explore the outdoor rock climbing wall at La Trobe University. 

Visual Arts – Vera Mitchell

Secondary 9-12 students participate in a double ceramics session for a Semester. The content covered included exploring a variety of techniques, associated with the medium of clay. The students were required to understand how clay works and the essential process to turn the material into ceramics. These students also used the potter's wheel and experienced the complexity involved when using it.
