Grade 3-4

Reading

This week students have been exploring with their readers notebook. They have spent time this week going over the expectations of what goes into their readers notebook and ensuring it is set up and ready for them to jot their thoughts down.

This week students have been taking home reading books to read. In year 3 and 4, we try to aim to read each night for at least 15 minutes.

Writing

In Writing, students have been excited to continue working on their persuasive writing text. This week it has been ‘why summer is better than winter’, and students are beginning to use persuasive devices to adapt their writing to make it even better. For example, this week, students have been using high modality words in order to reach out to the audience and even using emotive language to influence the reader and make them agree with the writer.

Maths

In Maths, students are learning about addition and subtraction. They have been learning many different strategies to help solve addition and subtraction which has helped them achieve their learning goals. Student have been enjoying playing the game ‘Greedy pig’, which is a game where students all stand up, teacher to roll the die students to record this number, teacher rolls die again and students add this to their total.

Students can stay ‘in’ as long as they wish. If a student chooses to sit down then their total score is the number they have accumulated. If the teacher rolls a 6 then any student still standing loses their total accumulated score and has a zero for that round. The teacher stops rolling after 10 rolls or rolling a 1, whichever is first. The winner of the game has the highest accumulated score.

Integrated

Students have continued learning about the First Fleet. We have discovered what life was like for the convicts that arrived as well as the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. We compared what life what was like for children back then which has been extremely insightful!

 NAPLAN

The year 3 students have been superstars at NAPLAN so far. They always enter the lesson with so much excitement and are determined to learn so they ace their NAPLAN test in Term 2. Each week we are practicing Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy. During our daily writing sessions we will be exposing students to both persuasive and narrative writing, so they are best equipped for NAPLAN.
