YARNING CIRCLE
YARNING CIRCLE
Did you know that we are learning on Boon Wurrung/Bunurong land? KSC is an 8 Ways school and we have been developing ways of embedding Indigenous Knowledge across the curriculum for the benefit of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island students and students from non-Aboriginal backgrounds. For those who identify as Indigenous, we have been running a Yarning Circle since 2020.
The Yarning Circle brings together students who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander to share their experiences, build community and shape their identities as they “walk two worlds” between Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Western Education at KSC. Facilitated by Ms Kennedy and supported by KESO (Koori Education Support Officer) where possible. Some of our students are very connected to their mob and some who are starting their journey into their identities. Whichever one you are, you are welcome to join us in the Yarning Circle, which is a protected space to chat and explore what you know and don’t know about your identity and other topics.
I also invite community members who are connected to their culture to contact the school if they have time to offer this group of students, with the appropriate WWC and vaccination updates, to contact Ms Kennedy Iznaya.kennedy@education.vic.gov.au
We have incursions and an excursion or two planned for 2022, in addition to NAIDOC Week activities to share together as a group.
