FIRE Carriers

On Wednesday 23rd March, we commissioned our 2022 FIRE Carriers.  During this ceremony our 2021 FIRE Carriers warmed their hands over the Fire and passed on the role to the heads, hearts and hands of our new FIRE Carriers.

The story of FIRE Carriers began with a dream to bring Aboriginal culture, history and spirituality into the forefront of education in Catholic schools. It is important to teach the stories of the oldest living culture to our youngest generations to ensure the living truth, the dreams and hopes of our Indigenous people are heard.

The “F.I.R.E (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education) Carrier program,” is an initiative of the Catholic Aboriginal Ministry of Victoria. The FIRE Carriers are commissioned to raise awareness of reconciliation for the wrongs of the past and to promote peace and justice for all, along with learning about and appreciating the rich culture of the Aboriginal peoples.

A F.I.R.E Carrier endeavours to:

  • raise awareness and promote Indigenous Culture at O.L.A
  • fundraise for the Open the Doors Foundation
  • represent O.L.A at community events and gatherings
  • help with Reconciliation activities and celebrations
  • participate and lead Aboriginal prayer and liturgy

We congratulate and would like to introduce our 2022 FIRE Carriers.

Sara T, Maggie F, Lucas W and Connor W.

Hi I’m Sara T from 5/6NC. As a FIRE Carrier, this year I am looking forward to continuing to raise awareness of Indigenous history and culture through events such as NAIDOC Week, The Little Long Walk, Open the Doors Foundation, Sorry Day. I have some ideas on how to strengthen awareness across different age groups. I’d also like to learn more about our First Nation’s people. By the end of this year, I hope that I have made a difference.

Connor: I am happy to represent OLA by being a Fire Carrier! I have seen a smoking ceremony but I would love to learn more about the culture of our First Nations people and the Boonwurrung people.  I look forward to sharing interesting things to the school community.  For example, did you know that "deadly" is an Aboriginal English word for "fantastic" or "awesome"?  I also can't wait for the Little Long Walk later in the year!

Hello my name is Lucas W, and I am a fire carrier this year. I am looking forward to leading the little long walk. I am also excited to participate in sorry day with the rest of the school.

My name is Maggie F and I’m proud to be a FIRE Carrier in 2022. I’m looking forward to going to places to represent our school and being a role model to others. I love being a part of new things, whenever there is an opportunity to try something new I will always try my hardest to get involved. I will put 100% effort into being a leader at this school. This year I am looking forward to learning more about indigenous culture and teaching it to others.
