Year 5 News

This has been a fast-paced fortnight, we welcomed the inclusion of the Labour Day long weekend and Curriculum Day as a well-deserved break for the Year 5 students and teachers.

We have progressed onto our second Unit of Inquiry ‘How the world works’. Last week, the students were introduced to their collaboration research task. Students were put into groups of 4-5 to research an assigned location somewhere around the world.

Based on their findings, students were then tasked to build miniature models of their location using recycled materials. It was excellent to see collaboration and creativity flow amongst the classrooms.

Please enjoy reading these insights into the task from some of our students.

I have enjoyed inquiry so much lately because we have been recreating our own cities! We started with research on our given cities or towns, that most of us had never heard of. For example, Jarrell! Sendai is a city but has a lot of forest vegetation and wildlife surrounding the city. We have been creating our cities with the recycling brought from home, such as cardboard boxes and plastic bottles. There were a lot of interesting cities including Bakersfield, Benguet, Jarrell, Sendai and last but not least Yogyakarta. I love this project and I can't wait to see the finished products.

On Wednesday last week we started an inquiry project on a town/city around the word. My group got picked for the city of Yogyakarta and it is in the special region of Java (fun fact, Java is the only region in Indonesia that is still ruled by a monarchy, which is a King and Queen). We are now building a replica out of recyclables including plastic, cardboard, and boxes.

Over the past week we were put into groups 5. We all had places to research and the group names are Jarrell, Benguet, Sendai, Bakersfield and Yogyakarta. We did a week's research and then we got the weekend to bring in cardboard boxes. The sad thing was the cleaners took a lot of our stuff. On Monday with everything we brought in we got to build houses out of them.

In the past two weeks we have been researching about different parts of the world. Everyone was put into a group of 3-4 students. We were researching Sendai in Japan. There was also, Benguet in the Philippines Bakersfield in California, Yogyakarta in Indonesia, and Jarrell in Texas. After we researched our own part of the world, we got to make a model of it! How? Well, everyone was told to brin in three recyclable materials, so you could make a city. I had so much fun doing it, I just wish we could do it again.

For inquiry we had to research different town in a group. I was in a group doing Bakersfield. We then shared our information with our group. Then we had to bring in recyclables to school to make a replica of some houses, buildings and I love to build stuff, so I liked gluing stuff down to our base plate.

Year 5 Wellbeing

This term the students have been working with Mrs Duffy-Fainu'u to discuss and develop strategies for dealing with conflict with peers and issues in the playground. This opportunity is available to all students and is part of our implementation of the Zones of Regulation wellbeing program. We encourage you to have a discussion with your child about this program and the strategies they have been developing for managing self-regulation and responding to challenging situations. We encourage students to incorporate their new strategies at home as well. Thank you to all parents for supporting us with our wellbeing program.
