Year 3 News

Inquiry

As part of our unit of inquiry How we Organise Ourselves, we are looking at different forms of communication for example, writing, reading, presenting and body language.

Today our teachers wrote what seemed to be some “random‘’ letters on the whiteboard. Many students had theories and shared their hypothesis with the class. No-one guessed the teachers code, so we watched a video, therefore learning it was Caesar code. Grabbing our whiteboards we de-coded it.

The message was:  YOU ARE AWESOME.

Students then wrote a coded note for a fellow class-mate.

It was really interesting learning about secret ways of communication.

Goodness, what a fun lesson!

B-bots

Another form of communication we looked at was coding.  This is when you communicate instructions to a computer to get it to do what you want.

In Year 3 we played with B-bots. We practiced programming and teamwork. We taped sticky-tape to our tables to create a shape. Then, we tested how far our bot would travel in 1 press. In teams we programmed our B-bots to travel along the sticky tape shape, by pressing forward, right, and left.

We then wrote down our instructions so that another team could program their B-Bot to travel around our shape.

Using B-bots, we learned a fun mix of coding, math, problem solving and communication skills.

Wow, what good teachers!

Kindness Culture

This week is Kindness Culture Week. Our teachers asked us to write a random act of kindness that we could do at school. We then turned them into challenges that we do each day. Some challenges have been to smile at every person we pass, hi five 2 random people in the yard and give a compliment to a friend. This helps us to remember to always be kind and it’s really easy.

Today we made a kindness heart for Kindness Culture Week.  The heart had three sides and included a kindness definition, mindful colouring and a kindness promise. They now hang in a cluster like the heart of our classroom.
