Book Week Parade

2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages and since Term 1 our students have been involved in various activities and studies related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This has included the importance of their culture, art, language and story telling.

Furthermore, The Great Book Swap on Monday was for our students to help raise money for remote Indigenous communities in recognition of and to celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day this Wednesday.

Also, in the library this week both teachers and students will be able to read, discuss and borrow from a large display of Indigenous picture storybooks and readers. If your child brings home one of these books this week, please take the time to share the story with them.

As promised, here is our Lamont Book Fair sales summary:

Our total sales - $2,081

Our Commission – In books (at 30%)

Commission amount - $624.30

In addition Lamont Books also allowed us to take $200 worth of books from the Book Fair.

Fathers Day Stall

A huge thank you to all the St Brendan’s families who supported the Father’s Day stall and sent their children with money. It is not a fundraiser for the school but aims to provide the kids with an opportunity to purchase a gift or gifts for dad, grandpa or someone special.

The room was buzzing and the mums that helped delighted in hearing the chatter and excitement as the kids shopped with so many ‘pleases’ and ‘thank yous’. Siblings shopping side by side, older ones helping the younger ones with their adding up and no arguments, just great teamwork. 😊 Without even realising it, students were learning budgeting skills and making choices about how to best spend their money. We hope the dads enjoyed opening their presents as much as the kids enjoyed shopping for them.

Congratulations to our newest choir member Abi H who received her choir badge at assembly this week. Well done, Abi.

Production News

Not long now! The students and staff did a great job during our first full dress rehearsal last week and all are continuing to work hard on their preparations for ‘Madagascar: A Musical Adventure Jr’. Parents and carers, please remember to send your child’s basic costume requirements in as soon as possible if you haven't already done so. These requirements are attached once again to this edition of our newsletter.

An additional last minute reminder note will go home shortly, containing information for parents and carers about production night, such as hair and makeup requirements, drop off and pick up arrangements. Please keep an eye out for this prior to production week.

Important Costume Information for students in 3/4S and 3/4TR

The costume elements required from home for these students are as follows:

-Navy blue short sleeve t-shirt. The St. Brendan’s School polo is suitable.

-Navy blue pants. School tracksuit pants or drill pants are suitable.

-Black shoes and socks (School shoes are suitable)

As many students in these classes will be wearing elements of their school uniform for the production, students do not need to leave their costumes at school prior to performance day. However, they will be required to wear or bring these elements this Thursday September 5th.

Production DVDs

DVDs of Madagascar: A Musical Adventure, Jr. can be ordered only via an online ordering system. Please note: The use of personal video cameras throughout the performance is strictly prohibited. Payment will go through Paypal and even if you don’t have a Paypal account, you can check out as a ‘Guest’ and use any credit card of your choosing (AMEX, Visa, Mastercard). Tickets

Don’t forget to purchase your tickets, as the last release has now gone on sale through The Frankston Arts Centre for our one and only performance. Tickets are still available but are

selling fast! Families may now purchase tickets in unlimited quantities for those who require more than the initial allocation of four tickets.

Excursion Forms for Production Day

Parents and carers, please remember to complete and sign an excursion permission form for each student. These forms are due back on Thursday September 12th.

Friday Afternoon Maths Games:

Recently, we decided that we would finish every Friday with a Maths Games Afternoon, from Foundation to Year 6. Why I hear you ask?

Well everyone loves playing games that are fun and motivating.

Engaging mathematical games can encourage students to explore number combinations, place value, patterns, and other important mathematical concepts. Playing games encourages strategic mathematical thinking as students find different strategies for solving problems and deepen their understanding of numbers.

So, as I looked around my very busy classroom on Friday afternoon, I had a huge smile on my face. There was a certain buzz in the room. All of the students were bent over pieces of paper, questioning, laughing, encouraging each other and they were happily working collaboratively on Maths.

I would encourage parents to ask their children what games they played in class. You might even like to ask them to teach you the game.
