An Update from Mrs Cosentino

Welcome Back

We hope everyone has had a restful holiday and is ready for a busy semester 2. We have some exciting programs planned. Robobus, supported by the Father Bob Maguire Foundation, is coming on Passion Fridays to provide STEM education to students.  We also have a Robogals workshop booked for the Year 3-6 students. The Book Fair is in August and the Year 3-6 students will have their first camp at the YMCA Anglesea. Prep students will participate in an in-school activity, Toy Science, run by Supreme Incursions.  They will explore different materials through ‘hands on’ experience with toys.

Staffing Update

We welcome the following new staff members to the South Melbourne Park teaching team: Ms Hasnaa Hamid (Prep D), Ms Emily Paine (STEM teacher) and Ms Natalie Brass (Literacy Support teacher).

Introducing STEM to South Melbourne Park

STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through STEM, students develop skills including: problem solving, creativity, critical analysis, team work, independent thinking, initiative, communication and digital literacy.

Why is STEM Important?

The global economy is changing. Current jobs are disappearing due to automation and new jobs are emerging every day as a result of technological advances.

The continual advances in technology are changing the way students learn, connect and interact every day. Skills developed by students through STEM provide them with the foundation to succeed at school and beyond.

Employer demand for STEM qualifications and skills is high, and will continue to increase in the future. Currently, 75 per cent of jobs in the fastest growing industries require workers with STEM skills. To be competitive, the Australian workforce needs people who can adapt to a changing workplace.  STEM empowers individuals with the skills to succeed and adapt to this changing world.

We Want Our Parents to Tell Us What They Think

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement.

Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.

All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22nd July to Sunday 11th August.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones.
