DAV Schools’ Competition State Playoffs 2019

On the 4th September August two Girton Grammar School Debating Teams competed in the 3rd Round of the State Playoffs of the Debater’s Debaters’ Association of Victoria Schools’ Competition at Northcote High School, having each finished on top or equal top of their grade ladders for the Bendigo region.

Our Year 11 B Grade team 1 consisting of Dominic Tune (11Je), James Brown (11F), Dinith Tenakoon (11Je) and Noah Ashby (11F) debated the topic, That we should introduce a universal currency, winning by an 1 point against Fintona Girls’ School. They will now progress to the Octo-Finals at St Lenard’s College in East Brighton on the 11th September, placing them in the top 16 teams in the state. Congratulations!

Our Year 11 B Grade team 2 consisting of Arunika Madina (11Je), Zoe Hilson (11F) and Sophie Thompson (11F), debated the above topic, but unfortunately lost to Trinity Grammar School. Bad luck.

Congratulations to all who participated.

DAV  - News from the Octo Finals!

On Wednesday 11th September, two teams thrashed it out in the Octo Finals of the Debating Association of Victoria Competition at St Lenards College, Brighton East.  The students were excellent ambassadors of the School.

The A Grade team (Year 12) consisted of Abbey Saxon (12 Frew), Jordan Rogers (12 Millward) and Charlie Wardrop (12 Aherne).  They argued the Affirmative  case, ‘That  the Government should be responsible  for the sale and production of all recreational drugs.’  They lost their debate but argued exceptionally well.  Thank you to fellow team member, Max Tulloch (12 Jones), who supported them in spirit.

The B Grade team (Year 11) consisted of Dominic Tune (11 Jenkin), Noah Ashby (11 Frew) and James Brown (11 Frew).  They argued the Negative case, ‘That we regret the Australia media’s focus on domestic news over national news.’  They too lost their debate but presented some very strong arguments.  Thank you to fellow team member, Dinith Tenakoon (11 Jenkin), who supported them in spirit.

Both teams are congratulated for reaching the Octo finals – an excellent achievement.

Swannie Award

Congratulations to Sophie Thomson (11F), Arunika Madina (11Je) and Jordan Rogers (12M) who have all won the coveted Swannie Award in the Debaters’ Association of Victoria Schools’ Competition for the best speaker in the Bendigo Region for B Grade and VCE Grades respectively. This is a great achievement particularly  given that it was Sophie’s and Arunika’s first year of debating and for Jordan whose talents continue to astound us. Well done to all.
