ACC Open Chess – amazing success:

In these difficult and uncertain times, with so much being cancelled, it is great to report on an activity that has been able to continue!  On Thursday this week our chess club competed online in the annual Open ACC Chess tournament.  We emerged the champion school for the 18th year in succession, and for the 21st time in the 23 years of competing in the ACC. Truly a remarkable achievement.

The competition was divided into two divisions; with a total of 21 teams comprised of 196 players entered. Mazenod had three teams – all in Division 1 – with 45 of the 97 players in division 1. Our 45 players represented us with outstanding attitude, competitiveness, and good sportsmanship.

  1. Mazenod A         24
  2. De La Salle A      21.5
  3. Mazenod B         20
  4. St Bedes              19
  5. Mazenod C        15.5
  6. De La Salle B      15

Team A: 1st. Consisting of our top 4 players together with eleven of our Year 12s, they won the competition comfortably. Congratulations to overall ACC champion, Duleesha Gunaratne of Year 11, who was also the recent Mazenod Open champion for 2021. Great to see our exceptional Year 8 and 9 chess players:  Jackie Li, Khoi Do and Chris Boey, who all placed in the top 6 for the entire ACC. Special mention to our 2021 Chess Captain, Elias Ng (Year 12) and the ten other Year 12 Chess players who have all worked hard on their games and represented the College with distinction for the last six years. It is our tradition that all Year 12 Chess club members get to play in the top team in their final year.
