Semester 2 Reports

Student reports are available on Compass.  Please download the report and discuss with your child.  Our reports are designed to give parents and students feedback on a range of learning behaviours that are known to produce positive learning outcomes for students.  If your child has been here longer than this year, it is a good idea to cross reference these with previous reports to see what the improvement has been.

The Victorian Curriculum requires us to assess students against the standard for the year level.  A C grade means the students in performing at standard.  This can be interpreted as they are performing as an average student at the year level would be expected to perform.  A D grade means they are 6 months behind their peers and a B grade 6 months ahead.  Again, it is a great idea to compare to previous reports to see if progress is being made.  If your child was a D grade at the end of last year and a D grade this semester, then they have achieved 6 months growth in 6 months.  If they were a D grade at the end of last year and they are a C grade this semester they have made 12 months growth in 6 months.  Please emphasise with your children that growth is what we are aiming for rather than the grade.

Each unit of work the students complete has learning intentions (year 7-10) or learning outcomes (year 11-12).  These intentions/outcomes articulate the knowledge, skills and understanding that the student should be able to demonstrate by the end of the topic.  If a student receives a Not Satisfactory grade (N) for an intention/outcome it is important to inquire with them why they think this has occurred.  Was it an issue with the learning being too difficult, or did they not complete the necessary tasks to demonstrate they had the knowledge, skill or understanding?

The Common Assessment Item grades relate to specific tasks the student has completed and give you a clear idea of how they have performed at key points during the year.  Teachers provide feedback in the form of a comment or an assessment rubric for common assessment items on Compass.  Please access this in conjunction with reading their grades.

The school holidays are a great time to have these conversations with your children. They will be more relaxed and will have the time to reflect on their achievements and areas for improvement.  Students can also use time on the holidays to consolidate learning by reviewing and practising new knowledge and skills.  Its also a great time for students to consider their work practices and how they can use their time at home to facilitate their learning at school further.

If you have any questions about your child's assessment/report please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher at the start of next term.
