State Youth Theatre Awards

Three students from St James have been nominated for a Youth Theatre Lyrebird Award for their performances in the musical comedy, 'The Drowsy Chaperone'.

'The Drowsy Chaperone' , is a parody of a 1920s musical comedy. The story is about a middle-aged, asocial musical theatre fan. As he plays the record of his favorite musical, the show comes to life onstage, as he wryly comments on the music, story, and actors.

This show was put on by Mentone Girls Grammar, with an invitation to St James students to audition for some of the roles.

Rad, Lewis and Ronan auditioned and excelled in their respective comedic roles.

Rad played the role of Adolpho – a Latin character, determined to break up the wedding by seducing the bride.

Ronan played Adolpho’s apprentice, following his cunning and hapless leader.

And Lewis, played George, the best man at the wedding, a walking disaster, who forgets to book a Minister for the wedding.

All three boys excelled in their performances, and were spotted by an anonymous judge in the audience representing the Lyrebird Awards.

Over the last few years, theatre opportunities for St. James students have expanded considerably. Not only does St. James put on its own annual shows, but it now partners with girl schools such as Mentone Girl's Grammar, Kilbreda College and OLSH College, offering our boys incredible opportunities to be involved in high quality theatre.

It is such a unique and wonderful opportunity for our boys.

All the best to Ronan, Rad and Lewis, on the award night which takes place on 8 December.

Rifle Shooting

On the weekend, Jayden in Year 9 competed in the Victorian Junior Under 18 Field Rifle Championships for 2019 in the Resting Prone (lying down) position.  It was held at the SSAA (Sporting Shooters Association of Australia) Springvale Range.

Jayden is extremely proud of his efforts, finishing in 2nd place overall.  Jayden also managed to shoot the highest score during one of the rounds - 98.1 out of 101.  Jayden only began his sporting shooting lessons once a month in March.  He trains in the .22 Field Rifle Discipline, in the prone, standing and sitting positions, as well as silhouette shooting. Congratulations Jayden.
