Library Monitor Thank you

A big thank you to the Year 10 Library Monitor team of 2019 - Daniel Jones, John Morgan, Liam Jones, Jake Holland and Kieran Halloran. Your ideas, enthusiasm and support has been very appreciated by both of us. Mrs Riordan and I will miss your good humour and assistance in the library and with our library events. A special thanks for all the reorganisation and packing of the old library in 2018 and setting up the new library in 2019.

We wish each of you every success with your future studies.

IASL Conference update

The experience of participating and presenting in the IASL 2019 Conference was very educational and enjoyable. Meeting with school library staff from across the world brought new ideas and insights. To celebrate this international connection, participants were able to discuss and enjoy their learning together.

International School Library month

To celebrate International School Library month, Year 7 students in English Library classes mapped their family’s origins and travels. These maps are on display in the library and enabled students to discuss countries and share their travel journeys. Some students had travelled extensively within Australia whilst others had been fortunate to travel overseas to a variety of countries.

Spelling Bee

Gathering a group of wonderful Year 7 students together to be contestants for a year level Spelling Bee is such a delightful experience. They bring to the event all the enthusiasm and nervous excitement of young people experiencing something for the first time that is at once challenging, and exhilarating. All the students did really well and can be very pleased with themselves for representing their homerooms, whilst at the same time securing a valuable individual achievement.

Congratulations to the eventual winner, Brandon Duong 7.3. Brandon will be involved in the SJC Champion of Champions spelling bee on 11 November. We wish him well.

Thank you to our two judges for the Year 7 bee; Joel Harriss and Ms Kate Brierty who did a fantastic job of putting the boys at ease and keeping the activity rolling.

Yr 7 Student comments about their Spelling Bee

The St James Year 7 Spelling Bee was a great opportunity for me to test my vocabulary. It was fun to listen to boys spell words and it was extremely competitive. Well done to Anthony for coming runner-up to Brandon.

Darren Carvalho 7.2

The Spelling Bee was a fun experience. You can challenge yourself with your spelling skills while competing against other students in your grade. I would highly recommend it.

Aaron Roberts 7.2

The Spelling Bee is a fun competition to help you learn how to spell new words and it is really interesting. Yourself and your friends can see what level of spelling you are up to and see who is the best at spelling.

Matthew Anesidis 7.2

The Spelling Bee was a great opportunity to test my spelling under pressure! I had lots of fun trying to beat my friends and would definitely do it again given the chance.

Freddy Telfer 7.2

During the Spelling Bee, older year levels came to watch us. They were all respectful and it was very nice of them to come. When people got a word wrong no one complained and everyone remained a good sport. Overall it was a pretty fun experience.

Joshua Jayme 7.3

I participated in the Spelling Bee to help out my class as we needed some people in the Spelling Bee. I am very proud of myself because I won the competition!

Brandon Duong 7.3

It was really fun to participate. I hope I can do it again next year.

Luke Trainor 7.4

The Spelling Bee was a great opportunity for me to meet new people and make new friends.  I liked the idea of having an audience to cheer us on and support us.  It was a very fun experience that I don’t regret signing up for.

Benjamin Hamilton 7.1

This year’s Spelling Bee was very entertaining to watch and congrats to Brandon for his win.

Blake Johnson 7.3

It was a bit scary at first but once I got into it  I had a great time. I even learnt some new words and how to spell them.

Aaron Fitzgerald 7.1

It was great fun and I liked it because it was cool to see so many people do it.

Byron Boukouvalas 7.1

The Spelling Bee was a great time and there was a great sense of competition and there was great support for everyone.

Anthony Emelianov 7.1

Champion of Champions

On 11 November it was a sunny afternoon and the Champion of Champions Spelling Bee was on in the library.

There were obviously four competitors, one from each year level. Brandon  Year 7,  Xavier Year 8, Carsten Year 10 and myself, Jonathan Year 9. The audience began to fill their seats and the spelling bee began.

Unfortunately the competition only lasted one round. This has never happened before. History was created. Three of the four competitors failed to spell their first word correctly and I was victorious after spelling the word, ‘guarantee’ correctly.

I am the 2019 St James College Champion of Champions spelling bee winner.

Congratulations to the other competitors for being winners of their year levels and respect to them for putting in their all.

There had to be one man left standing and I was lucky. I hope to be back to win a second title next year. Good luck to everyone.
