Year 7

International Karate Champion Athan Dritsas

On Friday 25 October in period 3, we were all prepared for a regular English class. But instead, we were sent to the Camino building where International Karate champion, Athan Dritsas, took time out of his busy life just to talk to us.

Athan started taking Karate seriously from a very young age and has travelled all over the world to compete. Athan’s story was truly inspiring and as we all sat in awe, he told us about the most arduous and testing moments in his career.

Athan had trained so assiduously for so long, but he was completely thrown off the tracks when he injured his ankle and spent several months on the couch. Yet through perseverance and determination, Athan was able to climb back up and pursue his Olympic aspirations.

I can say with absolute certainty that his story has shown us that if we try hard enough, we can overcome and achieve anything.

Liveability Fieldwork

The Year 7 Geography classes have been studying a unit on ‘Liveability’ this term in Humanities.

Fieldwork is an important part of the Geography Curriculum and we were very lucky to be able to take the students out to complete a task on this unit. The boys headed out to explore and investigate the local area of East Bentleigh. They were required to map the route taken and to mark on the map the various types of infrastructure that they saw. The aim of the fieldwork was for the students to be able to assess how ‘liveable’ this suburb is and to then be able to compare it accurately to the suburb that they live in.
