Junior Hockey

Division 5

College Hurricanes went down to Monivae Knights 3-2. Ben Walker scored both goals, and had a super match. Rupert Merrin performed well in the midfield, and was ably supported by Skye and Chloe Headlam. The team is playing great hockey, and sits fourth on the ladder behind, Coleraine, Demons and Monivae Magic.

Division 4

College Crusaders played College Rebels, with the Crusaders running away with the match 8-0. Rebels were down 5-0 at the break, and regrouped well in the second half. Archie Cameron tried hard in the midfield, whilst Matt Spence put in a solid display at fullback. Best for Crusaders were Isabelle Musson with 3 goals, Olivia Allen also with 3, Bridget Delany and Rosie Dopheide with one apiece.

College Chiefs had an entertaining 1-1 draw with Coleraine Gold. The game was a tight tussle, with neither team willing to let go the ascendancy. Best for College were Amelia Gilling, Toby Adamson and Kellan Sander in goal.

A reminder to players and parents that next week there are no fixtures, but we are scheduled to play on Saturday June 18th. As our player numbers are tight, it is important we field full teams on this first weekend of the College winter break.

Division One Women

With the first real autumn chill in the air on Sunday, the girls faced old rivals Dunkeld. The early stages of the game saw an evenly poised contest with both sides creating scoring opportunities. College was the first to break the deadlock with a silky back stick goal from Hannah Russell followed by a great scrambling goal from Mrs Williams right on the goal line.

College controlled much of the second half with Hannah Russell and Mrs Williams each adding a second goal to their tallies and Claudia Struck hitting a sweet reverse stick perfectly into the corner of the goal. The final score was 5-0 to the Thundersticks. Better players were Hannah Nichols, Hannah Russell, Phoebe Sweeney and Mrs Williams.

Boys' Hockey

The debut of the "veterans'" team, the Pink Barbarians, to give the Under 16 boys further competition and challenge last Saturday attracted great interest and quite a crowd.

College Gold met the newcomers first-up on Saturday morning and the oldies showed they knew a trick or two by taking a 3-0 and then a 4-1 lead.  Gold showed great composure to keep working and to end up recording a 5-4 victory.  Reagan Simons' back-stick shot had started the scoring after the boys had held sway for a long early period with no reward and once the first goal was scored, it became a regular flow of scores.  Harry Beal was in on the pads for the second, Lachie Armstrong finished off a fine series of passes, Reagan scored his second after taking a free hit quickly and opening up space for a shot, and the winner came from the stick of Jock Adamson, who was on the post as he should have been to deflect the ball into goal.  This was Jock's first goal at this level and what better time to score it?!  Reagan Simons, Captain Lachlan Holcombe and Oliver Hoskyns were tireless workers throughout and probably the best three young players on the pitch.

For Barbarians, there were some strong performances and many familiar faces - Peter Musson, normally a defender, almost demolished one of the goals as he scored, Stephen Nelson provided organisation, Wayne Munro made several fine saves in goal and James Muir, Ben Hawthorne, Dale Robertson, David Merrin, Mal Rowe and Alasdair Sutherland were active and involved. It was an enjoyable game and the boys were given a strong challenge which will be good for their hockey.  Many thanks to Captain of Hockey, Josh Nichols, who agreed to add this game to his umpiring schedule.

The second Under 16 fixture, between College Blue and Monivae, was another high-scoring affair.  Mrs Nichols' boys eventually ran out 7-4 winners but, as with Gold, had to record a 4-1 second half to end up on top.  Jonathan Lee scored his first-ever goal to start things off, finding himself well-positioned on the post, James Sutherland added the second with a neat deflection in the circle and Ferg Roberts displayed his favourite shot - the back-stick hit - to score the third.  The boys combined together more effectively in the second half with several fine forward moves featuring.  Tane Nelson was near the penalty spot and received a Sami Zehir pass for the fourth goal; Will Manifold scored the next two, the first a lovely controlled hit from a cross and the second following great lead-up work from Ferg Roberts and Tane Nelson; the final goal was Jack Green's, a superb strike from the edge of the circle on a tight angle.  Jack's goal was a fitting reward for an excellent game, he and Sami Zehir providing drive and control throughout the contest.

Twenty goals in the two games made for exciting hockey to watch!

On Sunday night, the Open team took on Demons and this game began at a frenetic pace.  An early Tom Verco goal following a one-two with Tom Bunge was reward for forward pressure but too often we rushed ourselves and missed opportunities.  Our play settled as the half went on and a Penalty Stroke was well converted by Tom Verco before Josh Nichols hammered a shot home from the top of the circle.  The Verco hat-trick was completed just before half-time and the 4-0 lead was excellent reward for some fine play.  The second half was scrappier and we struggled to find the same intensity or run.  Captain Nichols pushed home a fifth goal but we lowered our colours for the half with the final result being 5-2.  I thought Nick Lacey played a superb game as sweeper.  He was well supported by Tom Bunge, who ran himself to a stand-still, and our midfielders, Nichols, Verco and Liam McMaugh.  Our defenders worked hard to keep things under control and largely succeeded in shutting down our opponents before they entered the circle.

So, it was another good weekend for our teams!

A reminder that we do play this coming weekend.  Under 16s are on Saturday morning and the Open team is on Sunday night, report-writing day on Friday notwithstanding.
