Mayor of Maroondah Visits

The Grade 3 and 4 students were very excited to welcome a special visitor on Wednesday morning: Mayor Mike Symon! Students have been learning all about the roles and responsibilities of the local council, and they had some insightful questions for the mayor when he visited. Mayor Symon was very generous with his time and patient in his responses, we thank him for a wonderful addition to our learning this term.

Today I received a visit from councillors from Grade 3/4 asking me questions about the problems I am having in the school. We spoke alot about rubbish in the school ground and treating our plants with respect.  The councillors are taking these problems and working towards a solution for the school.  I look forward to hearing from them.

Book Week is next week!

Next week is Book Week across Victoria and here are some of the activities happening around our school:

  • Tuesday 23 August - Book Swap.  Our School Captains are running a Book Swap, this is how it works.  Your child selects a book from home that everyone is happy to swap for another book.  On Tuesday morning the books are collected and your child receives a raffle ticket.  They bring this to the Swap at lunchtime where they can choose another book that takes their interest.  Double check the book is one you are happy for your child to swap as it is impossible to retrieve.
  • Wednesday 24 August - Write a Book in a Day.  Working in two teams, twelve of our Grade 5/6 students will work for twelve hours (8am-8pm) to plan, write and illustrate a book of no more than 2500 words.  This is a fundraising event of the Kids Cancer Project.  The students are busy raising funds and would be thrilled if you were interested in donating, even a small amount of money.  If this is a cause close to your heart, then check out these links: https://writeabookinaday.com/teams/?id=1192  or  https://writeabookinaday.com/teams/?id=1191

  • Thursday 25 August - Visit to local Childcare Centre.  Some of our Grade 5/6 students are heading to Children's Corner Childcare on Wonga Road to visit the four year-old kindergarten students, spending time sharing stories, talking about school and promoting our school.
  • Friday 26 August - Book Character Parade.  All students are encourage to dress as their favourite book character and come along for a special parade at the morning assembly.  We invite you all to come along and join in fun.  Check out our next newsletter for photos of this special event.
