Sports Round-Up

Sports Report

By Lisa Currey

It has been a very eventful term already with students attending the North West regional athletics carnival, competing in the state-wide knockout competitions and attending the Goodooga Indigenous games.

Six of our students have progressed through to the NSW CHS athletics carnival which will take place from the 7th to the 9th of September at Sydney Olympic Park.

Bella Suckling and Matilda Currey will compete in individual events, long jump and discus respectively, as well as the 15 years girls relay event with Megan Crutcher and Samantha Marchant. Emily Hartnett will compete in the three individual events of 200m, long jump and high jump, whilst Jordan Lonnen will also take on three events, 400m, 800m and high jump. Congratulations to these students, they should be very proud of their achievements, and we wish them all the best in Sydney.

We'd like to thank and acknowledge Growth Ag, Cotton Grower Services, Cotton Seed Distributors and the Wee Waa High School P&C for generously supporting these athletes and our three state lawn bowls students. Their support is helping with travel, accommodation and uniform costs that the students have in order to participate.

Just before going to print with our newsletter, Hunter Doring, Brock Allen and Kyne Allen wrapped up two days of competition at St Johns Park, Sydney in the final round of the State-Wide Lawn Bowls Knockout. The boys earnt the right to compete in the five game knock-out, having recently placed in the top 16 NSW teams.

On the first day they played three games; convincingly winning their first two games against Terrigal and Glendale, unfortunately they went down in their final game against Mudgee. On day two they played a further two games, first against Alstonville where it was a tight game right up until the end with the boys going down 11-9. Their final game, against Camden saw them finished the competition strongly, winning 16-7. The talented trio placed 7th out of 16 teams in the state-wide lawn bowls knockout.

Mrs Currey said 'The three players make a very strong team that has years ahead of playing together. We are so proud of each of them and I'd like to say a very big thank you to parents/carers and to Mrs Wallington for supporting the boys in Sydney. Mrs Wallington said our team conducted themselves admirably and were a very positive reflection on our school and the Wee Waa community'.

Eleven students from Years 7 to 10 under the supervision of Mrs Currey attended the annual Goodooga Indigenous Games. The day was filled with fun and laughter with students participating in a variety of traditional Aboriginal games against students from a large number of metro and regional schools.

The students were treated to a delicious lunch and fantastic hospitality from the host school, Goodooga Central School. James Williams was awarded a medal for best and fairest in his team, ‘nhurraay’ (snakes) and the students said they look forward to attending again in 2023.

Later in the term the boys and girls Year 9/10 Netball Schools Cup teams will travel to Tamworth to contest the Inland regional finals. If the teams place in the top two positions this will see them secure a spot in the state finals in Sydney. A big thank you to Lorna Gleeson and Kerry Crutcher who have helped coach, score and umpire at our netball representation. Mrs Wallington and Mrs Currey are looking forward to the next round of competition.

We also have a boys U14 Cricket Knockout team and a girls U14 Softball team who will participate in the Knockout competitions later in the year. Thank you to the teachers who volunteer to organise teams and ensure students attend these competitions.

A big thank you to Helen, Naomi and Pat who organised a fantastic afternoon of Aboriginal games during our recent NAIDOC Week celebrations. Students across Years 7-12 were involved in traditional games that had been adapted, with students using contemporary equipment. A big hit on the day was the kangaroo tail throwing, where students tested their skill and accuracy tossing a ‘kangaroo’ tail into a ring. Mr Vella made the activity very enjoyable with some students able to consistently hit their target.

Finally, a big thank you to staff, parents and carers, WWHS P&C committee and local businesses who make it possible for our wonderful students to have access to such an array of sports at local, regional and state level.
