Magis report

It has been another busy week for the Magis program! Firstly, congratulations to our Year 8 novice debating team who made it to the Octofinals of the Western Australian Debating League (WADL). We wish the students all the best in their next debate!
FameLab Academy students attended a training seminar on Monday – in preparation for our College heats, which will be held next Thursday before school, in the Gonzaga Barry Lecture Theatre (GBLT). This group of Year 9 and 10 students will prepare a three-minute presentation on any scientific, engineering, mathematical or medical topic of their choice. Special thanks to the Maths and Science teachers who will be assisting with the judging. The winner of the heats will represent the College at the State Semi-Final, later this term. We wish all our STEM enthusiasts the best of luck for Thursday.
On Tuesday, Year 7 & 8 Magis Option students, along with the College Shakespeare Club, took part in an action-packed afternoon of Shakespeare immersion! The students began their afternoon competing in teams, in a quiz which tested them on their knowledge of all things Shakespeare. Congratulations to our first place winners:
- Quiz 1: Grace, Carla, Chloe, Claudia, Imogen and Isabel.
- Quiz 2: Elizabeth, Alyssa, Lily, Phoebe and Catherine.
Students then met with JTC alumni and Federal Member for Curtin, Kate Chaney, who attended the incursion in support of the Magis program and the Arts. The Bell Shakespeare touring ensemble ‘The Players’ performed the play ‘Shakespeare is Dead’ - a funny, fast-paced rollercoaster ride through the world of William Shakespeare. The performance explored key scenes and soliloquies, as well as analysis of Shakespeare’s language, choices and themes. Some 'happy few' students were invited on stage, to portray the feuding Montagues and Capulets and, to immense pleasure of the students, Ms Chaney took to the stage in the role of Queen Gertrude from Hamlet! The incursion finished with a Q&A session with the cast. Was a fantastic afternoon – enjoyed by all. Special thanks to Genevieve Ferguson-Allen (College Magis Captain) and Mr Haines (Year 7 ADP) for their assistance on the day.
A group of Year 7 - 10 Magis students will depart this afternoon for our annual Magis Camp to Point Walter. The camp is designed to meet the needs of Gifted and Talented students – providing them with an opportunity to extend and enrich their learning further. We very much look forward to hearing all about their Magis experience in next week’s newsletter!
