Paul Kelly - From Little Things Big Things Grow

This afternoon our Media Leaders, Lila and Liam, sat down with Miss Merrett and some children from 4A to find out what’s been happening in the classroom this week. Here’s what they had to say:

Miss Merrett: “This week we started looking at the “discovery” of Australia, and I have put the word discovery in quotation marks because we know that there were already people here in Australia before European settlers arrived. We looked at what settlement meant for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People as well as what it meant for the settlers. During this time we watched a video clip of a song ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow,’ and the children were really moved by it. As we explored the topic in more detail, the children became acutely aware of the way in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People were treated. This motivated them to think about what we are doing now to improve the situation, and how we can learn from the past. The children’s response to the learning experience was genuine and impactful. I am still getting goosebumps talking about the experience.”

Interview with Xavier Zammit
“I’m infuriated by what happened. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People were here way before everyone else. They weren’t treated like humans. That was the most ridiculous part. Now that I have learnt about this part of Australian history, I will teach others about it to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I want everyone to be treated fairly.”
Interview with Isabella Howley
“I can’t believe the English settlers were told they have the right to take other people’s land. We found their land later. You can’t just take it from them. The Aboriginal People didn’t deserve this. But the English settlers had guns (muskets), which made it difficult for the Aboriginal People to protect themselves and their home. It wasn’t very fair. Now that I know this, I want to make sure all people have equal rights and equal opportunities in this country.”

Comments from our Media Leaders:

Liam and Lila: “It’s not fair that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People were treated like they were nothing even though they have been here for 60 000 years. They were pushed around and not treated the same. We need to change this! We want to live in harmony with everyone.”
