In reading, MLC students have been learning how to visualise and make inferences. Reading between the lines and making a movie or image in our minds is a way of connecting with the characters and events in the text. We have been exploring texts and short, wordless films rich in imagery so that students can create their own narratives based upon their prior knowledge and evidence from the text. Students are transferring these creative insights to their personal writing where they are learning to create visual images to entertain the reader.
In Mathematics, students are learning addition strategies and will soon move onto the addition algorithm. All mathematical concepts are taught with the context of real life scenarios so that students can see the authenticity of their learning. We have also spent some time learning how to tell the time! If you happen to have an analogue clock in your home, it would be great if you could spend a couple of minutes each day helping your child tell the time.
During Project time, students have been exploring the wonderful world in which we live. They have investigated many natural phenomena such as how mountains are formed, how our continents were created and how volcanoes and earthquakes occur. This learning was enhanced by our recent excursion to Melbourne Museum and IMAX. The cinema filled with audible gasps of wonder from our inquisitive students as they began a 3D journey to outer space!
Our students are absolutely thriving in our weekly multi-cultural kitchen classes with the very enthusiastic and knowledgeable Mrs Lu. Students are mastering a variety of cooking skills such as chopping, slicing, mixing and kneading. Our culinary adventures have taken us from India to Italy as we whip up vegetable curries and delicious pizzas.
An upcoming highlight for our wonderful students will be our annual Book Week celebrations. There is nothing better than immersing ourselves in high quality literature. Stay tuned for an invite that will be coming home very soon.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Justine Bertrand
