NAIDOC Week

Building our Community and Identity Committee (BOCI)

Our BOCI committee student members have been selling badges with Koorie words on them and all funds raised are going to the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. Special thank you to Freya Matthews who has made most of the badges and Zahra Hanako for promoting the initiative.

Year 7 Movie Incursion: The Last Daughter

As part of NAIDOC week, on 14th July, the whole Year 7 cohort watched the movie “The Last Daughter”. Everyone gathered in the PAC for the screening for a movie about Brenda Matthews, a woman who had been taken away from her birth family, and had been given to a white family, who she had grown up with. This movie not only shows her connecting to her Indigenous roots, but on a journey trying to find her white family. This movie showed us the truth about our country's past and went into the depths of what actually happened during the time of the stolen generation.

SRC Poster Project

The SRC members have been busy preparing classroom poster displays for all rooms to celebrate Reconciliation and NAIDOC weeks.

The SRC came along and explained the importance of the project to the whole staff and to share aims of the initiative and to encourage participation. They made and distributed class sets of posters which included the Australian flag, the Indigenous Australian flag, The Torres Straight Islander flag and the Indigenous map of Australia.

The following speech was written and presented by SRC member Ollie Thomas, 9C.

‘Do you know the indigenous country you live on? There’s a good chance you don’t. A study in 2021 showed that about 48% of Australians admit to not knowing what country they live on. To put that into perspective that’s a bit over 13 million people. That’s enough people to fill over 130 MCGs.

For many years indigenous Australian history has been overlooked, ignored or misrepresented in our education system.

By learning about the history and culture of indigenous Australians, we can promote understanding and respect for their communities. Correcting past injustices, improve cultural understanding, and promoting a sense of belonging for indigenous students. By seeing our cultures and history represented in the curriculum, everyone can feel valued and included in our education system.’
