The English Wide Reading Program

Our Year Seven English students and their book recommendations from Semester One.

Once a week we go to the library, sit down, and open our chromebooks. We do 30 minutes of Education Perfect then we have the pleasure of getting our book from the tub, opening the book to the page we left it on. It feels amazing to see what will happen next, having sometimes been left on a cliff hanger. It’s extremely calming to read and be transported to another world.

The book that I read this semester was The Beast of Buckingham Palace by David Walliams.  I really enjoyed this book because it wasn't too long or too short and it had a lot of mystery, fantasy and action included. It was also really good because it had a humorous and adventurous storyline. I think this story would relate to kids in year 7 like me. Overall, I rate it 8/10.

I recommend Timmy Failure by Stephan Pastis because the plot is easy to understand and the illustration is simple but good. If you just read the book and not look at the drawings it’s also easy to create an image in your mind.

My rating for this book is 8/10 because it’s pretty simple, and the main character is quite interesting. The side characters are also unique in a type of way.

My favourite part of the book is when Timmy’s segway disappears and he goes looking for it. It’s fun seeing him look everywhere for it because he walks around looking for it.

I would recommend Warriors, Fire and Ice by Erin Hunter because it's a long story and it is very interesting to read. There are different clans: thunder clan, river clan, wind clan and many more. My favourite part has got to be when thunder clan wanted a fireheart but they say it's impossible.

Title of the book: The Missing Mitt (Case of the Hardy Boys)

Author of the book: Franklin W. Dixon

Illustrator: Scott Burroughs

Recommendation: For students who would like to improve their English by reading a book that is not very hard. If you are new in school and English is not your first language, this book is really good.

Rating: The story is about a baseball game in which one of the best players has lost his lucky mitt. Two brothers engage themselves to find it. Their father is a policeman so they follow his method.

Favourite part: My favourite part is when the brothers decide to unite themselves to find the mitt.

This book Tom Gates is Absolutely Fantastic (At Some Things) by L. Pichon is honestly a 4/5, I would definitely recommend this book if you're crazy like me. It's pretty funny and he doesn't just have 1 book, he has tons. I'm currently up to the 3rd book. I'm so stuck to this book and I can't sleep without thinking about this book. 100% Recommend it!

Dark Rise is by C.S Pacat. I rate this book 9/10 because it includes my favourite type of genre, and the use of descriptive language is good. My recommendation about this book is the plot of it. It is very clear to understand, and you can see the image in your head as you are reading the book.

My favourite part of the book is somewhere near the start, because it builds up the tension. When you start to read it, something in your mind happens like there’s a big fight scene going on.

The book I am reading is the crime novel The Snowman by Jo Nesbø.

It's about a detective who tries to solve the mystery of disappearing women in Norway over the decades involving a serial killer. I am really enjoying reading this because it is very intense in dramatic scenes and is interesting to read. I think students will enjoy this if they prefer long and patient books.

The book I have been reading is titled This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada. This book is all about a famous scientist who spent years on vaccinations for diseases suddenly dies and the only way to retrieve all his data is for his daughter to solve all the puzzles and get through all the security measures and save everyone on Earth before the "Hydra Virus" takes over. This book would be good for students who like thriller and sci-fi books. 5 Stars!

Elliot Allagash is a great book written by Simon Richabout. It is about a loner who has no friends and gets beaten up everyday until one day a billionaire's child comes to his school. I think this would be good for many students who are struggling to make friends to relate to this character and to not feel alone. I give this book a 4/5. My favourite part is when Elliot's dad goes nuts over a game of monopoly. I think a lot of year 7s could relate to the struggle of finding friends and should read Elliot Allagash.

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, by J.K. Rowling

RATING - 9/10

RECOMMENDATION For anyone from year 7 like me

MY FAVOURITE PART - is when Harry finds that a murderer is his godfather. He was very shocked until he found that he had not killed anyone but actually that someone else blamed it on him.

You should read Demigods and Magicians by Rick Riordan if you are interested in some supernatural things and want to know about fantasy worlds. My favourite part would be the starting of the book. It is interesting. I feel like I want to read some more about it and know about it

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU THAT READ THIS BOOK.

If you have ever read the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and you liked it, then this book, Tom Gates by L. Pichon would be perfect for you. He says a lot about his favourite things such as his favourite band, his favourite chocolate and lollies. There are many dramatic events in this book like when his family went camping and it was a total disaster, but this book is really fun to read.

The Keys To The Kingdom Mister Monday and Grim Tuesday by Garth Nix

These books are in the first two in The Keys To The Kingdom series.

I recommend these books for anyone who likes fantasy or doesn’t know what they should read because of its twists, storytelling, characters and their development.

I rate Mister Monday 8 out of 10 and Grim Tuesday 9 out of 10.

The reason I rate Mister Monday lower than Grim Tuesday is because when I read Mister Monday I didn’t fully understand certain things, but when I read Grim Tuesday I understood key things about the story. I feel like if I read Mister Monday again I would appreciate it more than I do now.

My favourite part of Mister Monday was the final fight and the storytelling about the house. The way that Arthur (the main character) is portrayed and told. The final fight is something I was expecting but not the way it happened. My favourite part of Grim Tuesday was the dance battle scene when Arthur has a dance battle against Grim Tuesday. The dance battle was not expected one bit and gave a laugh.
