Staff in the Spotlight
Sub School Staff in the Spotlight
Throughout term 2 and 3 we will be spotlighting our Middle and Senior Sub School Teams giving our school community the opportunity to find out more about who they are, why they became a teacher/leader and what they love most about their jobs!
This week we are spotlighting Mel Zulfic.
Mel is one of our Year 8 Year Level Leaders and is part of the Technology team teaching Digital Technologies, Create with Code (Yr 9/10 elective) and Minecraft and Web Design (Yr 10 elective). Mel is an integral part of the Production crew and her positivity is infectious amongst students and teachers – be sure to check out her funky sneaker collection!
How long have you been teaching?
Four years
What is your role in Sub School?
Year 8 Year Level Leader
Why did you decide to become a teacher and/or leader?
As cliche as this might sound, one of my main reasons for becoming a teacher was to try and make a difference in my community and to have a career with purpose. I feel like I am well into my journey and am fulfilling the goals I set out to achieve.
What is the best thing about teaching and/or working in the subschool team?
Working in middle school I feel privileged to be able to be a point of call for students who need assistance or who just want to have a chat. I can see the impact this has as I walk around the yard and students yell out "Hey Miss" and we stop to have a conversation about their day or what they have coming up. I also feel privileged to be working with some truly exceptional people who are extremely supportive, empathetic and hard working. They make those difficult days bearable and are always happy to jump in and support when needed.
What has been one of your best teaching moments?
Knowing that something I have done, or one of the classes I have taught has had a positive impact on students would have to be a highlight for me.
What are three things your colleagues and/or your students would say about you?
Kind and caring, laughs at her own jokes, loves pokemon
What is your idea of a perfect weekend?
I recently spent a day at Kryal Castle with my family, and I have to say being in the cold, warming up around a fire and seeing the happiness on my kids faces was pretty epic.
If you could invite 5 people to a dinner party, who would you invite and why?
Having friends and family around who I love and can share experiences with is what I would consider an ideal dinner. Eating a meal and laughing until you cry, building those human connections, why not do it with people you love?
What is the one piece of 'advice' or the one thing that you always say to your students?
Be kind and don't give up! There is always a solution that we can come up with :)
