SAKG NEWS

Coming out the other side of Winter there is a hype of activity within the SAKG program.  Firstly, the team would like to say a huge thank you to all those who joined our Working Bee on Saturday, July 29th. The staff, families and the Baha’i community group enabled us to complete all the assigned jobs for the day, putting the garden in great shape as we are nearing to Spring. Here is a little snapshot from the morning:

In the kitchen over the last fortnight, we have used up the last of the corn from our harvest with our current crop of celery to make creamy corn and celery soup. Some of the classes have started learning how to make real stock with chicken frames, vegetables and herbs.  Being freshly made it has such a good flavour, and is so healthy, which is what we want for our kids! Some classes have been dehydrating and blitzing rosemary and saltbush for our spices collection, and the smell is divine! We are looking forward to using them in dishes in our next rotation.

We have also had a bit of Mexican fiesta with nachos, homemade salsa and toppings.  Last but not least we made a good old fashioned bread and butter pudding with sultanas.  We have encouraged the kids to talk to their grandparents and special carers, who may well have an heirloom recipe of their own to try.

Students in the re engagement room tried out a recipe that makes a big claim, "Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies" and Kate thinks that the overall consensus was that they were indeed pretty perfect!  Here is the recipe:

In the garden we are planning and preparing for Spring planting. So, each class gets to plan what veggies they want to grow and when we need to grow them. We are doing this by creating a planting schedule for August-November inclusive. The four groups then go out into the garden to get involved in activities such as animal care, harvesting, growing and observing and creating. The Animal care groups and Garden Leaders will be busy this week as we have two new guinea pigs (girls) called Amethyst and Pearl. The Grow groups will be learning how to take hardwood cuttings to try and grow new plants such as blackcurrants, grapes and mulberries. The Observe and Create groups are doing Wonderful Worm artworks to enter into a competition. Students may only create one carefully drawn worm and this gets cut out and pasted onto a group artwork.

Some exciting news in our program is that we have some more additions to our animals.  Please meet our two new girl guinea pigs, who have been kindly donated by the Willison family. They arrived in at the start of the week and are settling in nicely.

And lastly, we have some free potted strawberries and punnets of sweet pea seedlings available at the Delacombe Community Share space, located out the back of the school near the garden.  Please help yourself!
