Indonesian Cultural Experience

It was with excitement that we welcomed back our first ever group of students to Indonesia this morning. They were welcomed by Primary students with great cheers and welcome banners. We will hear more about this exciting trip in the weeks to come, but we are grateful that they are all home safely with great stories to tell and testimonies to share. Thanks to Daniel Bradbury, Lisa Dumicich and Mic Dempsey for leading this trip, and to Clare Bradbury for all the work behind the scenes to make this first trip such a success.

Whole School Assembly

Yesterday we had a great time of celebration as we came together for a Whole School Assembly to celebrate NAIDOC Week. The purpose of these assemblies is to showcase what is happening in each of the sections of the school in a way that is accessible for all our students. It also provides an opportunity for students to lead in worship and for parents to also join in this aspect of our school life. However, this year, in our 50th year, we have also been inviting back an alumni to speak to our students. Adam Drake, who was a student in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s is passionate about indigenous issues and is the Director of Balanced Choice (https://www.balancedchoice.org/), a business that works in assisting and mentoring indigenous people get their lives back on-track, particularly after a period of incarceration. He shared passionately about his work and the impact that MECS had on him as a young person to care about and challenge the injustices that he saw and experienced. The assembly also provided an opportunity for us to continue to ‘extend the hand of friendship’ that was initiated last year in our NAIDOC assembly to all indigenous brothers and sisters.

CEN Developing Leaders and Teaching & Learning Conference

Next week, a small group of staff head off to these concurrent conferences with leaders and teaching and learning experts from across Christian Education National schools in Australia. This year these conferences will be held in Melbourne. These opportunities are always a rich time of learning and networking as we encourage others in similar schools to lead and develop curriculum and teaching practices infused with the biblical story, and also encourage those who are in leadership roles across our schools.
