Art at MECS

What is Happening in Primary Art

Our hope in our Visual Arts courses in the Primary school is that: ‘Students will reflect on the Whys and Ways of Art. Through knowledge and techniques learned they will come to see how Art can be used as a channel of service with which to show love and appreciation to God and others, and a vehicle for restoration within the physical world and relationships God has given us stewardship over.’

MECS’ celebration year has been a good opportunity to show appreciation, build community and celebrate culture through the various decorative artworks produced by the students for our whole school assembly, and later this year for our Celebration Evening in November.

This week our school is celebrating NAIDOC week, and again, students have contributed with artistic responses to an important event. Examples of that artwork will be seen in another article about the NAIDOC assembly.

Several artworks were undertaken by Years 1 – 4, inspired by the Aboriginal Flag and by various Indigenous artists, such as Bronwyn Bancroft. The Year 5 and 6 students are currently working with Mrs Vanderjagt on Story paintings, sharing about their lives and experiences through the use of symbols, imagery and colour, as inspired by Jimmy Pike and others. As well as doing plaster wrap sculptures of Dream Time creatures.

Some of the ‘ways’ we have been exploring in Art are modelling, painting, drawing and print making.

Later in the term Mrs Vanderjagt will be doing some tie dye and resistance dying on fabric, with all classes, to continue our 70s theme for our Celebration year.

Our primary artists are doing a wonderful job this year!
