Girls Empowered in STEM

In the last edition of the College Newsletter we announced that Year 9 students, Hana and Jeeveysha, had been selected to attend the Melbourne University Girl Power Engineering and IT school holiday program.  Out of the 500 applicants received, our girls were selected for their remarkable submission and shortlist interview. Jeeveysha and Hana have written about their experience and would like to share it with the DSC community.

Hi, I am Jeeveysha, Hi I am Hana and we got accepted to a Melbourne University Girl Empowering Engineering and IT Program. We were so grateful when we heard about the opportunity, and even happier when we found out that we made it into the program. This program runs from year 9 to year 12 for girls who have a passion in STEM. It is a 4-day camp for 40 girls who get chosen out of all the schools Victoria and is held at the Melbourne University campus.
This program provides many amazing opportunities to expand your knowledge and learn more about STEM, especially the engineering and IT fields. This program has taught me so many valuable things about girl empowerment. The women who ran the camp were amazing female role models who showed me that I can achieve whatever I want if I put my mind to it. Did you know that only 13.6 % of the engineering workforce are females? We want to push and inspire more women to show the world that we can do it to. At the camp we made amazing new friends, and created great bonds with the mentors who are also current Melbourne University students. They gave us valuable advice that has motivated us to accomplish our goals.

We did awesome activities such as surveying, python coding, bridge building, sustainable housing, geomatics workshop, micro bits, motor racing team lunch, drones, and more, we even had a movie night in the cinema room with ice-cream and popcorn.

This experience was amazing, and we are so grateful that we can be a part of the program. This program will help guide us in the right direction for our future careers. This program personally helped me with my confidence and mindset, it has given me a stronger and more positive mindset. The women in STEM at Melbourne University are truly empowering, it is an amazing experience, and we have made everlasting memories. We suggest that you sign up when you get the opportunity to in year 9. You also get the opportunity to do your work experience at Melbourne University for year 10. I also have to mention that the whole program is for free.

Milgate Primary School Athletics Day

Brimming with school pride, a group of enthusiastic Year 9 students stepped up to the challenge, answering the call to lend a hand at the Milgate Primary School Athletics Day on Monday 17th July!

Amid the spirited atmosphere, our students embraced their roles and offered camaraderie and encouragement to the young athletes. Beyond the spirited competition, the day was a testament to the power of mentorship and a connection to our wider community.
