NSW Philosothon

On the first Saturday of the holidays, a team from St Patrick’s College participated in the NSW Philosothon at North Sydney Girls High School and competed against other schools through discussion of a series of philosophical questions.

This year’s Philosothon challenged the participants in complex questions about the value of art, equality and competition, the meaning of human existence in the face of technology change and whether holes even exist. In a philosothon, students are scored by judges in the areas of critical, creative, and collaborative thinking. Judges listen for how well a student crafts an argument and contributes original ideas, as well as their ability to show intellectual courage and humility with their arguments.

Alexander Brunner (Year 8), Matthew Caristo (Year 9), Adonis Thanos (Year 9), Thomas Coorey (Year 10) and Jeremy Simonetto (Year 10) are commended for the excellent contributions they made in their first philosothon. A special mention to Thomas Coorey who won Second place for best philosophical contributions in the Year 11 age group (working up a year) and Jeremy Simonetto for achieving Third place in the Year 10 age group for best philosophical contributions.

Very impressive achievements indeed! Congratulations to all boys.
