Annual Language Speaking Competition

Sunday 11 September

On Sunday 11 September, a group of our Chinese and Spanish language students competed against students from other schools at the MLTAQ Annual Language Speaking Competition at Griffith University.  Students worked very hard in the lead up to the competition and gave up countless morning teas and lunch times to practise. Their dedication paid off as Clayfield College placed either 1st, 2nd or 3rd in all divisions across both languages.

Our Chinese students did us very proud by achieving 7 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 2 bronze medals and 2 highly commended awards. Our Spanish students also attained an amazing result, bringing back 5 gold medals, 4 silver medals, 1 bronze medal and 4 highly commended awards.

Year 9 Business and Entrepreneurship

Students in Year 9 Business and Entrepreneurship put their creativity skills to good use for their Term 3 assessment, which involved preparing an entry for the Office of Fair Trading’s Buy Smart Competition. The genre for the entry was decided by each student, and ranged from board games, vlogs, Netflix episodes and building and designing a website, all with the purpose of educating a chosen target audience about an aspect of consumer rights (including online shopping, scams and identity theft). Well done girls on your amazing efforts. We wish you luck in the competition!

QIMR Biology Excursion

On Tuesday 14 September, the Year 11 Biology class visited the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) to attend ‘A Day in the Life of a Scientist’.  Students gained hands- on experience in a working laboratory to participate in an immunology experiment to diagnose Ross River Virus. Students were also treated to a very informative talk by a QIMR Research Scientist, who gave them valuable insight into pathways in science as a career. He also spoke about his own research which involves bio-printing mini organs. The day ended with a tour of one of the many laboratories that make up QIMR, where cutting edge science is happening every day. Many of the Year 11 students were inspired by the experience and hope to apply next year to participate in the work experience program that is offered for Year 12 students.

Humanities Week

Humanities week activities ended well last week, with many students continuing to engage in the lunch time activities connected to English, History and Geography.

On Wednesday, students were involved in ‘building History’ and were very creative in the way they designed and made monuments to the past out of Lego and plasticine! Tutankhamun’s mask, the Knight and Viking ship were particularly impressive!

On Thursday, groups of students participated in a Humanities Quiz put together by Ms Haddock. Competitive spirit was high and we are delighted to confirm that a Team of Year 10s won! Well done to everyone who participated.

The inaugural Humanities Week was full of laughs and creativity. So many students participated across Primary and Secondary and we hope they enjoyed bringing Humanities to life last week!
