2022 Science Challenge

After completing challenges at regionals and state earlier in the year, the LCS Science challenge team was ready to face nationals head on. On Thursday 20th of October, the team left from school at around midday to head to the airport for the flight to Melbourne. Upon arrival, they travelled another 2 hours to Bendigo Southeast College to attend an introduction and celebratory dinner. It was a chance to converse with the other national finalist schools and experience some of the talents of the home school, who performed an impressive cultural dance for everyone.

The next day, October 21st, was the time for LCS to come together to compete in the national competition. Tension was high and nerves were rising, but the team was ready to give their best. Challenges that were featured in the state competition were given additional rules to raise the difficulty and new challenges like catapult and job juggle were thrown into the mix – fortunately for LCS, the team had practiced some of these new challenges in preparation for nationals, leaving our different groups well-off across the board.

“Science Challenge Nationals was a really good experience, especially being able to interact with kids from the other schools, and just the chance to represent the state at such a high level.” – Sophie Sands, Science Challenge team member.

LCS scored well across a wide variety of challenges, taking first place in the whole day activity Hover Frenzy, and achieving good scores overall in all the half-day challenges. After the much-anticipated bridge testing segment of the day, the final scores were announced. Of the 8 schools competing on the day, LCS took second place, narrowly missing the win by a 28-point margin, earning 1355.15 points out of a total 1600. To celebrate the accomplishment, the team went out for dinner at a restaurant in Bendigo, focusing on each other’s company and recounting stories of the day as the trip began to come to an end.

On the way back to the airport the next day, LCS made a stop at the DFO shopping centre in Melbourne. By the time everyone was getting ready to board the plane, students were having difficulty finding enough space in their bags to store extra pairs of converse, new pieces of clothing and packed boxes of Lindt chocolate. Overall, the 2022 Science Challenge competition was a fantastic experience for everyone taking part, and though the team didn’t quite win this year, it’s safe to say that all those involved in Science Challenge would strongly recommend the opportunity for any students thinking about signing up next year.

Notices of Intended Withdrawal of Enrolment

At this time of the year we are processing a significant number of enrolment enquires. Term 4 is also the time when we begin the process of organising classes for 2023.

To assist us in this process, we ask that families intending to withdraw a student at the end of 2022 provide the required one term (10 school week's) notice in writing to Mr Adrian Bosker ASAP (if they have not already done so), stating when the student will be withdrawn and where they are to be educated.

Please be aware that end of year withdrawal notices received after the start of Term 4 will be considered insufficient notice, and a penalty of 5 week’s tuition fees may apply, which may be deducted from the family’s Fee Deposit paid on enrolment.

Note for the office

ABSENCES/ATTENDANCE

Communication regarding a student’s absence needs to come via the school office. This information will then be passed on to the student’s teachers. Parents are asked where possible to telephone the school or email the office in advance when a student will be absent.  If you subscribe to the mobile app, The Hub you can also lodge an electronic absentee form which will reach the office immediately.  The school telephone number is (03) 6327 2854 and email is office@lcs.tas.edu.au

Students who are late must sign in at the school office.  Students will be issued a ‘late pass’ that must be presented to their teacher.  Students who sign in ‘late’ must have a note of explanation from home.   Three unexplained late arrivals will result in a detention.

Yr11/12 students that have a study period in the morning and do not attend Class Teacher must sign in at the office as soon as they arrive at school, if students have not signed in whole day absences will be on their record. Yr 11/12 students may leave the school grounds during study periods, however they are required to sign out and back in at the office.  This is important, particularly in the case of an emergency, so students can be accounted for by the staff and emergency services.

Written permission is required to leave the school grounds during school hours (except Year 11 & 12).  Students are to meet parents at the office. All students must use the sign out folder at the student counter in the main office.  When students return to school, they should report to the student counter in the main office and sign in.

If families intend to be absent from school due to extended holidays (3 days or more), parents need to fill out in advance an Application for Extended Leave for Travel form, found under the Parents and Students/Downloads & Policies tab on our website:  www.lcs.tas.edu.au(Please see Extended Leave Policy on next pages)

MEDICATION

Should your child need to take prescribed medication at school please inform the school office.  All medication, both prescription and over the counter medication, needs to be in original packaging and labelled with clear dosage instructions (prescription medication needs dosage instructions from a registered medical practitioner) and must be administered at the school office and students are not permitted to carry medication at school. Medical forms are sent home at the beginning of each school year and parents are able to indicate whether they give permission for paracetamol to be administered if required.

UNIFORM

Students who are not in correct uniform, wrong jacket or coloured socks etc must get a uniform pass from the office.  A note of explanation should be provided by parents.  Three uniform non compliances, without parent explanation, will result in a detention.

From the School Wellbeing Unit
