Learning and Teaching

This term our Integrated Unit is Design and Technology based around the concept of Invention and Inspiration

Junior Grades

The students are going to be working on becoming conscious consumers who make good choices for the environment in which they  live. They have been looking at the concept of ‘recycling’ and how this is essential to protect our environment for both people, animals and nature. The students have been sorting through their lunch boxes and identifying what is reusable and what needs to be in rubbish. As a group, they have discussed what a waste free lunch box looks like and how best to then design their own. They will soon be learning how to sort materials out correctly into plastic, paper, glass, metal and compost.

Middle Grades

The students have been investigating both the wonders and horrors of inventions from the past. They have been able to then discuss both the pros and cons of these inventions specifically. As a group, they have been looking at the ethical issues some of these inventions raise for design and technology creations for the future. Students are beginning to work on a Google Slide presentation about an inventor and the famous invention they have created. This will then be shared as an Oral Presentation to their peers as the term progresses.

Senior Grades

The students have begun their unit of work by pondering how they are able to enrich the world through inventions. They have discussed the provocation of why people invent things by looking at both old and new inventions made over time. The students are learning to recognise inventions that have been created to meet a specific need and are now researching these inventions in depth. Students will be explaining what the invention is, why they believe it was invented and provide their opinion on its usefulness in society. The students are then going to be looking at the different types of energy and how roller coasters, in particular work using ‘forces’ as this is part of all inventions.
