Level 1

Level 1 had a fantastic excursion to Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, enjoying every minute of the guided tour. As we moved through the Aquarium, the children were encouraged to reflect on the different animals and sea creatures and observe how their habitat provided what it needed to survive – water, oxygen, shelter and food. Pinjara the crocodile was certainly a favourite, along with the penguins, glowing jellyfish and stingrays. A huge thankyou to all our parent helpers – we appreciate your help so much! We also appreciate the bus drivers – it’s quite a noisy ride!!!

During our Reading Workshops we have been having fun visualising and making mental images when we read. This helps us to make sense of what we are reading and supports comprehension. Visualising was also our focus for Show and Tell and very much enjoyed by everyone!

We have continued to expand our understanding and knowledge of Persuasive text types, focusing on opinions and the importance of using strong words to convince the reader. The children worked together in teams to convince their teacher that ‘Superheroes are brave’, ‘Dragons are dangerous’ and ‘Pirates are mean’. Classes have also explored the structure of a Persuasive piece of writing and the need to provide evidence to support the reasons why we believe something.

Money, Money, Money! Dollars and cents! Our Mathematics focus has provided children the opportunity to better understand Australian coins, their features and their value. We have also practised how to use coins to show different amounts and ordering coins according to their value.

As we continue to work through our Inquiry unit, Water Works, the children enjoyed exploring the ocean and sea creatures, to tie in with our visit to the Aquarium.

Back to our focus on water as resource, the Level 1 children participated in a ‘water walk’ of the school, looking for sources and uses of water at Rangeview Primary. This exercise also encompassed important skills relating to location and map reading, as we explored with a school map and clipboards.

We are now over 2 weeks into our Kindness Challenge. All the children have been embracing the daily tasks and we are finding that kindness really is contagious!

Finally, all the Level 1 and 2 students came together last week to listen to the 9 students who were selected to read their ‘If I had a superpower’ speeches for the Public Speaking competition. What a marvellous morning we had, completely engaged by all the ‘super’ speeches shared with us. The four Level 1 students who participated were so brave and performed so MAGNIFICENTLY!

Congratulations to all students across Level 1, who wrote and delivered a speech as part of Show and Tell at the beginning of Term 4.
