Chatham Happenings

An update from the students of Chatham Primary School

Conor of 4CM was proud to represent Chatham in Butterfly and we are thrilled to report that he won!

We wish Conor every success at the Regionals on Friday 24th March.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather! On Friday, 3rd March the Year 3 students took off on an adventure to the Maranoa Gardens. With some parent helpers to join us, we walked to the gardens and met three horticulturists who work at the gardens. They let us explore the root systems of different plants and find mini-beasts with the help of some magnifying glasses. We were excited to make paper pots and fill them with soil and a broad bean seeds which we got to keep to watch grow. We also checked out lots of different varieties of seeds that could be found throughout the gardens.

In groups we used our map reading skills and working our way around the gardens, discovered different facts about each area as we went. We were grateful to have so many parent helpers for this task. After we had finished our activities, we left the gardens and headed to Beckett Park. Here we were joined by Mr Cotching and Ms Kirwan as well as lots of parents who came for a picnic lunch. We even got to have a play in the playground.

What a fabulous day!

Football Victoria Soccer Clinics

On Wednesday 8th March, our students in Years 4-6 were thrilled to participate in a series of Soccer Clinics facilitated by Football Victoria. The recent World Cup meant that students were very keen to refine their skills and learn more about the ‘world game’. Football Victoria coaches, Jafar and Lucas, shared their expertise with our students with both passion and a sense of fun. These opportunities are open to schools to apply for through School Sport Victoria and promote fitness, fun and participation, whilst igniting student interest in particular sports.

 Football Victoria Soccer Clinics

Last Wednesday Chatham Primary School got to learn about the ‘world game’. Jafar and Lucas, from Football Victoria, hosted Chatham in a one-hour soccer clinic, teaching a variety of skills to students in Years 4, 5 & 6. We played a bunch of mini games, including soccer knock out and various mini-soccer matches. It was very clear that the students were having lots of fun. You only needed to listen out for the cheering, screaming and laughter!

Below are some insights from some of our Year 6 students:

"I really enjoyed competing in the world tour competition" - Hazel E

"I had lots of fun playing soccer with my friends and learning new skills" - Rowan CB

"Lucas and Jafar organised a very fun and creative experience" - Arya P

"It was fun to be able to play with all of our classmates together because, during lunchtimes, we tend to go our separate ways and do different things" - Sam R

Think U Know Incursion – Year 5 & 6 Federal Police Incursion

On Thursday the 16th of March two federal police officers, Senior Constables Rochelle and Heath, came to talk to the 5 and 6 students about cybersecurity. It was an informative and entertaining talk about how to stay safe online. Some of the points they made were:

  • Kids under 13 should not have any contact on social media or apps that are not suitable.
  • If you are using any social apps, you must definitely avoid using your real name, photo or personal information.
  • Ensure that you have disabled any specific settings to avoid hackers finding any of your information.
  • If you are being bullied and harassed, tell a grown-up or a guardian.
  • There is a Jacket Team in the police force that specialises in collecting information from a device, which they will use as evidence in court.
  • Use ‘block’ and ‘report’ if you suspect that a stranger is trying to get into a deep conversation to try and get personal information.
  • You never know who you are talking to.
  • The average age that people play online games is not 9, 10, 11 or 12… but actually 34 years old!
  • Use screenshots as evidence if you come across, or are involved in, a situation where bullying is evident.

At the end of the incursion, all the Year 5 and 6 students really enjoyed this special experience. We would love for them to pay us another visit in the future as their information was extraordinarily helpful!
