Year Seven

Mathematics

The Year Seven students have been actively engaged in NAPLAN, discussing many challenges and finding solutions to problems. Now that NAPLAN has been successfully completed, many students have a regained confidence in their mathematic ability.

Students have been busy studying “Chance” and the terminology associated with the probability of an event taking place. They can describe when an event is likely, unlikely, certain or impossible.  When conducting mathematical experiments, students can identify the sample space and the number of elements of an event. Through the use of practical examples and the Jacaranda online platform, students have expanded and reinforced their knowledge on Chance.

To support students’ learning, students used “Essential Assessments” to test and recall their knowledge. Using these results, students identified goals and challenges in their learning. They have been encouraged to use this platform to work through their goals and clarify their understanding and misconceptions.

In the new term students will work through our Geometry Unit. Wishing everyone a well deserved rest and holiday.

English

Thanks to Darlene and Amelie for this fortnight's newsletter article.

LOTE (Spanish)

After the mid-term test, students in Spanish lessons have been actively reflecting on their progress and learning and the resources that they can use to support themselves.

During the past few weeks, the topics that we have been covering include: days, months, and birthdays, personalities, country and nationalities, as well as jobs and professions. By the end of the term, students are submitting their final project - Todo sobre mi (all about me) in Spanish which requires them to apply all the topics that we have been covering in this term to a presentation.

Also, recently we successfully made our students have access to Education Perfect in Spanish which is a fantastic platform for learning.

Good job to everybody and enjoy your holiday

Health and Physical Education

The Year Seven Students have been continuing their Athletics unit, looking at Discus and Shot Put. Students focused on practising transferring weight through their legs to upper body to generate force when throwing. They had the opportunity to put their practise into competition by participating in the schools Athletics Carnival. Students all gave their best efforts and there were a lot of students who performed extremely well. Students have also been participating in Inter-School Sports. Sports included Cricket, Volleyball and Swimming. We had many winners in our swimming team including one student from Year Seven who made it to the next round. Congratulations on a great effort.

For Health, Students have been looking at Nutrition labels and the effects of unhealthy eating. We also looked at strategies to improve our eating habits including looking at the Health Star Rating System. Currently, students are completing their assessment task on the Dangers of Junk Food.

Science

This term in Science, the Year Seven students have completed a unit of Chemistry. The students have been learning about various separation of mixtures techniques and had their hands-on experiments for Magnetic separation, Filtration, Decanting, Centrifuging and Chromatography techniques. The students thoroughly enjoyed making their own crystals and seeing the different shapes that they made.

The students engaged in the Seven ACES program had the opportunity to design some of their own experiments and extend their understanding of variables required to create an effective practical investigation. They also presented their understanding of how crystals are formed in nature, by completing a presentation displayed in the Laboratory.

To support learning, Year Seven students used “Education Perfect”. On this platform, students are encouraged to recall prior learning and clarify their understanding for various concepts related to curriculum. Students will also have their Summative Assessments in the first week of Term Two.

Next term, Year Seven students will be studying Biology and looking at Classification and Ecosystems. They will be introduced to using Microscopes and be making their own slides.

The Science department hope that you all have a safe Easter break and come back refreshed to start Term Two.

Humanities

The Year Seven students have made a great start to the year with the learning of the Civics and Citizenship domain. They have continued to explore their own moral compass and matching this to the Universal and Australian values. Students have engaged in discussions around reconciliation and the significance of this to our First Nations Peoples. Students will be further engaging in learning activities throughout Term Two to explore Ancient Australia and the strong Indigenous culture to further their thinking from this term.

The Summative assessment has now been completed for the Term, and students were able to develop good study skills while learning to revise their work and learning tasks prior to undertaking their assessment.

Congratulations on a wonderful Term, Year Seven students.

Enjoy your holiday break.
