Year Six

Dear year six families,

Wow! What a term it has been filled with a lot of learning, incursions and sport.

We are currently in the midst of our second Unit of Inquiry and our students have been working hard to extend their knowledge on social media and how their digital footprint can impact their future. This unit will continue into Term 2 and students will learn more about how to make good choices online and how to set online rules and boundaries that will keep them safe.

To coincide with this unit, our students have been writing persuasive texts and have published them onto the online blogging platform Edu Blog. There have been some fantastic blog pieces submitted and our students are beginning to understand the importance of collecting facts, statistics and information from reliable sources as this enhances their argument and helps convince their audience. It has been amazing to see so many of our students completing the set homework tasks, especially the writing planner. Our students now understand the importance of having the writing planner completed for homework as it prepares them for our weekly quick write, which in turn is making them better writers as they come into it with a plan and prepared ideas on what they will write.

First Aid

On the 27th of March, our year 6 students completed the First Aid in schools’ program, which was facilitated by St Johns Victoria. The program taught our students about the importance of First Aid and what they can do if there was an emergency. There was a big focus on the DRSABCD and students were taken step by step through the practical skills required when following this acronym. The knowledge and skills gained in this program will help develop our students First Aid awareness and encourages them to be resilient when faced with an emergency. Students took turns practicing CPR on the dummies provided and observed how to correctly place someone in the recovery position.

Jeffrey Fan from 6B reflected on this incursion and said “It is important to know First Aid because if I ever come across an emergency, I will know how to help until the ambulance arrives”.

Inter-school Summer Sports

Due to Victoria’s unpredictable weather, several of our interschool summer sports could not go ahead on the 29th of March and have been postponed until Term 2. Fortunately, volleyball and basketball were both being played indoors so students participating in these sports were still able to compete on this day.

Basketball

Our basketballers, coached by Mr Peterson and Ms Grenfell, headed to Altona Basketball Stadium where they versed other schools from around the Wyndham area. Our boys’ team, made up of Leek, Junior, Noah, Matheijs, Jalen, Ahmed, James, Arian, Harlem and William, and our girls’ team, made up of Manawa, Justus, Chrisma, Vanya, Jayne, Manahil, Trisha, Dina, Almira, Maya and Mikayla, battled it out and both made it to the finals. Their passion and teamwork was fantastic to see and both teams ended up coming second in their relevant divisions.

Volleyball

Our girls' volleyball team, coached by Mr Bliss, displayed amazing teamwork and enthusiasm in the lead up to the sports day and were often seen practicing at lunch time. Their hard work paid off and the girls were the overall winners of their division, after managing to win all of their games played at Lumen Christi Primary School. The team, made up of Ava, Dolly, Tara, Bryanna, Layla, Aaleahya, Estea and Halo, will now compete at districts and we are so proud of their fantastic effort.

Harmony Day

We were so pleased to see so many of our year 6 students participating in the Harmony Day celebrations. We are so fortunate to live in the most multicultural suburb in all of Australia and this provides us with an opportunity to learn about diversity and celebrate our differences. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’ and this was evident in year 6 as we took the time to listen and learn about our peers’ cultures, traditions and beliefs. By doing this, we all were able to increase our understanding of cultural diversity and inclusivity.

Environment Captains

This year, our school is working hard to solve sustainability issues across the school. To help with this mission, year 5 and 6 students were able to apply for the role of Environment Captain, which will have them leading our student green team, make them responsible for helping create and implement green initiatives and will allow them to educate others about sustainability.

A massive congratulations to our successful applicants:

  • A reminder that students need to be wearing the correct Saltwater College uniform every day. This means no nail polish and/or hair out if longer than shoulder length.
  • Students should be bringing their MacBook’s in every day and they must be charged.
  • If your child is going to camp, please ensure they return their medical form ASAP as we need to gather and collate this data.
  • Students are expected to complete their homework each week. This is due on a Friday.
  • Absences: If your child is away, parents/carers need to log this on XUNO to minimise any unexplained absences.
