Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

Congratulations to all our students and we'd like to announce how proud we are of them all. They've worked their way through Naplan and have continued to demonstrate a great work ethic and capabilities. They've had the pleasure of meeting their buddy class and pairing with a prep buddy, establishing new friendships for the year and settling in with routines.

Inquiry

The students have dove into our new unit of inquiry,  Migration may be a response to challenges and opportunities. So far, we've enjoyed learning about migration and have explored various texts to help with our understanding. The students have explored push and pull factors and thoughtfully discussed the consequences migrants experience. As the first term has finished, we're certainly excited to continue these new learnings in term 2.

Literacy

We have enjoyed learning about our own Austrralian author, Anh Do. Anh presents a life experience that fits perfectly within our unit of inquiry. His picture book, 'The Little Refugee', captures the attention and hearts of our young readers as they learn more about the struggles Anh, and many other migrants, have experienced. They beginning to learn and understand empathy and how grateful we should be for what he have. In writing, the students have began writing memoirs of their own personal experiences. Moments and stories from their lives that are worthy of sharing and having others read. They're building their writing skills as they experiment with new vocabulary and create stories that are enjoyable to read.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the students have engaged in lessons focussing on Time. Focuses include reading time, elapsed time problems, converting time and reading timetables. The students have been put into fluid groups of Maths according to their needs of learning. We've aligned each of them with victorian curriculum content descriptors, as a form of differentiation. Many have been challenged with numerous problems, collaborated with students from other grades and are building their relationship with their teacher.
