Year Four

Dear Year Four Families,

What a busy and exciting Term One we have had. We are extremely proud of the way students have engaged in their learning this term.

Unit of Inquiry

We have recently commenced our second Unit of Inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘Sharing the Planet’.  Students will be inquiring into the central idea 'Distribution of finite resources is dependent on a number of factors'.

Student's started the unit by participating in a provocation to tune into the new ideas and spark their thinking. Working collaboratively in groups, students were given the task to create a poster about earth's natural resources. Unfortunately not all groups were created equally. Ranging from a group only being able to use a scrap piece of paper and one pencil to a group being allowed to use devices, coloured paper, pencils, glue, scissors and printing. Groups with limited resources were able to ask others to borrow materials. This provided an opportunity for students to conceptualise the idea of resources being distributed around the world when being discussed during the unit.

Harmony Day

The Year Four students concluded their first Unit of Inquiry by organising a whole school event for Harmony Day. It was wonderful to see students and staff across the school dressed in their cultural attire or a touch of orange. Students participated in a range of activities and were open minded when learning about the cultures and traditions of others.

Literacy

In this Unit we will be learning about persuasive texts and how to accurately structure them using an introduction, body of arguments with supporting evidence and a conclusion. Students will be exposed to different persuasive techniques and use of devices. They Students completed a writing piece about environmental issues.

In Reading students explored texts on Epic about renewable energy and worked in small groups to write a summary of the text to share with their classmates.

Mathematics

Students have continued to work on developing their knowledge of addition and subtraction through problem solving open ended questions and participating in their fluid groups. They have set their learning goals by completing Essential Assessment and working through the goal setting cycle, thinking about ways in which they can work on their goal both at home and at school.

Homework

Students are encouraged to continue reading for 20 minutes each night over the holiday period and engage in conversations about what they have read with their families. They are also encouraged to complete My Numeracy task on Essential Assessment.
