2023 NAPLAN Information for NAPLAN parents and carers

Why do students do NAPLAN?NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracyassessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9sit each year. It is the only national assessment allAustralian students have the opportunity to undertake.

As students progress through their school years, it’simportant to check how well they are learning theessential skills of reading, writing and numeracy.

NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills thatstudents are learning through the school curriculumand allows parents/carers to see how their child isprogressing against national standards and over time.

NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessmentand reporting process. It doesn’t replace ongoingassessments made by teachers about studentperformance, but it can provide teachers withadditional information about students’ educationalprogress.

NAPLAN also provides schools, education authoritiesand governments with information about how educationprograms are working and whether young Australiansare achieving important educational outcomes in literacy
