DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - TEACHING AND LEARNING

Mr Michael Chiera

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is a nationwide measure through which parents/caregivers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.

Sacred Heart College NAPLAN Assessment Dates:

  • Writing - Wednesday 15 March
  • Reading - Friday 17 March
  • Conventions of Language - Monday 20 March
  • Numeracy - Tuesday 21 March

Year 7 students will sit their NAPLAN assessments during Periods 1 and 2, and Year 9 students during Periods 3 and 4. Students involved in the ACC Swimming Training Day on Monday 20 March will sit their NAPLAN assessment earlier on this day.

If you would like more information about NAPLAN, please visit https://www.nap.edu.au or read the NAPLAN Information for Parents and Carers 2023 brochure.

ONLINE LITERACY AND NUMERACY ASSESSMENT (OLNA)

The Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) is designed to enable students to successfully meet the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) requirement of demonstrating the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy. To successfully meet the literacy and numeracy requirement, students must demonstrate the skills regarded as essential to meet the demands of everyday life and work in a knowledge-based economy. These skills must be demonstrated in Reading, Writing and Numeracy.

Students who have achieved Band 8 or higher in any of the three components of Reading, Writing and Numeracy in their Year 9 NAPLAN are acknowledged as having demonstrated proficiency in using a range of ACSF Level 3 skills in that component and will not be required to sit the corresponding OLNA test. Students in Years 10-12 students who have not yet met these requirements are provided with two opportunities each year to sit the OLNA assessments.

The OLNA Student Report, provided by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA), outlines the specific components and the corresponding achievement categories for individual students. Students in Years 10-12 students and their parents/caregivers can access this document in SEQTA under 'Reports'.

Students from Years 10 to 12 who are required to sit one or more components of the OLNA next term will receive an email communication with additional information, including how to best prepare for these assessments.
