BUILDING UNDERSTANDING AND CONNECTIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY

The great love of Jesus for all people was a driving force in Euphrasie Barbier's vocation to bring Jesus’ love to the poor and marginalised of the world. This week at Sacred Heart College we have witnessed both staff and students driven by the same vocation to provide care and support to those in need, in our local and global communities.

SHC AND CITY OF JOONDALUP - ENDING HOMELESSNESS

Last week SHC's own warrior for Social Justice, Mrs Rossana Hywood, represented the College as a member of the Joondalup and Wanneroo Ending Homelessness Group (JWEHG). Rossana has represented the College in this group since its inception in 2019.

JWEHG focuses on information sharing, services collaborating in the region, collection of statistics, advocacy and referrals for local people at the margins. As the only school in the JWEHG group, Rossana shared how our students are helping the homeless in Perth through our Young Vinnies and ‘Kids Food for Kids’ lunches and breakfast programs.

We also have Sacred Heart College students, parents/caregivers, alumni and staff volunteer to work at Grace Café Outreach Centre for the Homeless in Joondalup, with some of the 80 meals cooked by our Vinnies group going to Grace Café. Students and parents/caregivers who would like to volunteer at Grace Café to help those in need can contact Rossana at rossana.hywood@cewa.edu.au

SR SALOTA RNDM FROM SAMOA

At lunchtime today, staff and students gathered to hear Sr Salota, an RNDM Sister from Samoa, speak of her years' of experience working with marginalised women in Kenya and the Phillipines. Accompanied by Sr Marie Therese Ryder RNDM, Sr Salota shared stories that echoed Euphrasie’s lifelong vocation to advocate for those at the margins. In next week’s Newsletter, a student article will share details of Sr Salota’s stories and her inspiration for our own Mission at Sacred Heart College.

HEARTS ON FIRE

Sr Salota’s visit coincided seamlessly with the launch of Sacred Heart College’s own Red Dress project titled Hearts on Fire. This inclusive community textile art project reflects the intentions of the international Red Dress project of the same name. Later this year, students working on the Hearts on Fire project will invite members of our own Sacred Heart College community in Sorrento to be involved, along with participants from Sacred Heart Girls' College in Oakleigh and RNDM communities in Vietnam and the Kimberley. See next week’s Newsletter for more information about how you can be involved and support this Arts/Mission project.

FREMANTLE DOCKERS AND SAM BLOOM INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY STUDENT EVENT

This morning, a number of staff and Years 11 and 12 students represented the College at the International Women’s Day Student Event at Emmanuel College. Celebrating the social, political, economic and cultural achievements of women worldwide, this event provided students with an opportunity to listen to keynote speaker Sam Bloom and share their future goals with students from other Catholic colleges. Next week’s Newsletter will feature an article written by students who attended this event.

NEXT P&F MEETING - TWILIGHT TOUR OF THE YARNING CIRCLE

All parents/caregivers are invited to come and see our newly installed Yarning Circle prior to the next P&F Meeting on Monday 13 March. The evening will begin in The Hywood Room (Staff Room) at 7:00pm before making the short walk over to the Yarning Circle. Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Ms Sasha Wells, will be present to share more about the cultural significance of this space and the reasonings behind its design.

Light supper will be provided after the tour. For catering purposes, please RSVP HERE.
