SSV Senior Boys Cricket - State Quarter Finals - Mr. Jay Baker

The Senior Cricket team competed in the State Quarterfinal against Melbourne High School on Monday 20th of March at the East Campus in Leongatha. Melbourne High won the toss and batted first, taking a cautious approach against the speed of Harry Hoekstra and the craft of Tim Niven. We bowled and fielded well through the first ten overs taking a couple of wickets. Kade Berryman produced an excellent run-out and the game was evenly poised until late in the innings when the Melbourne High batsmen hit the boundary consistently and ran well between the wickets. They compiled 120 and it was going to be a tough chase but very achievable with our batting lineup. Cullen Anderson and Mitch Croatto got us off to a flier scoring above the required rate early. Mitch departed bowled and Harry Hoekstra was run out trying to force the issue which made life difficult. From there we struggled to get momentum as the Melbourne High spinners bowled with great control. We fell short by 15 but the boys are to be congratulated for the way they represented the school and the attitude they presented!

Harry Potter! Mrs Laura Muranty

Theatre Studies students in Years 10, 11 and 12 were fortunate enough to view the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child last week. This once-in-a-lifetime show proved to be a dynamic celebration of the arts, full of magic, illusion, and special effects. Following the performance, they were treated to a Q&A session with some of the actors and creatives. Students commented and evaluated different aspects of the performance from a theatrical point of view.

Sophia Demos in Year 10 wrote,

The theatre practitioners behind the masterpiece of Harry Potter stage show interpreted the themes of magic through the use of props, lighting and set design. During the scenes on the Hogwarts Express, set designers used a revolving stage floor to create a diverse spatial flow and motion, creating the illusion of the train moving through different locations. The stage allowed the audience to feel as though they were transported from one location to another.

Aimee Le Paige in Year 12 wrote,

In the interpretation of the written script of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, actors used the elements of emphasis and contrast to show the different way people in the Harry Potter world viewed Harry and his son Albus Potter. When Albus was placed in Slytherin by the sorting hat, people around him called him names making him embarrassed, emphasising the contrasting narrative, as Harry being in Gryffindor was well known and praised amongst the society. This showed the audience the contrasting way that the two characters were viewed in this scene, subsequently setting up the narrative for the rest of the play.

Celebrating Harmony Week!

The library was alive last Friday, as students and teachers celebrated Harmony Week with a special morning tea. Among the attendees, were students from culturally diverse backgrounds and from the Diversity Allies group, who all came together to celebrate their unique identities with each other. Ms. Parry organised a smorgasbord of international food from more than ten different countries. With a backdrop of music from around the world, energies were high, and conversations flowed about the growing diversity and how we can make our school culture more inclusive and harmonious.

Ms. Muranty, who is the Cultural Liaison Officer, was impressed by the turnout on the day and was excited to see multiculturism thriving. In her role, she aims to develop further inclusion and celebration of our diverse families and the richness they bring to our school culture. She also has many other plans, such as starting a (RAP) Reconciliation Action Plan and embedding more First Nations curriculum and pedagogy in our classrooms. If you are a family from a diverse background and would like to talk to Laura about how our college can support and celebrate your culture, please contact Laura Muranty on, lmuranty@mmcrc.catholic.edu.au

Year 8 Drama - Ms Joanna Jacobs

Students in Year 8 have been working on a cross-curriculum project. They have studied everyday life, food, the feudal system and war. They are now using that knowledge to build replica props and a self-devised performance.

SSV Swimming - Mr Bernard Lumsden

Our SSV regional team headed off to Sale to compete for the right to participate in Melbourne in the School Sports Victoria Swimming Championships to be held in the first week of term 2. A goal most of our swimmers achieved. Our year seven girls relay team had sacrificed attending a part of their year seven camp to earn their spot in the Sale final and the effort was more than worth it as they competed strongly to come first and are headed to Melbourne.

Only minutes later our senior boy's team also found their way to MSAC in a month's time by also being victorious. An effort made all the more special when Milli MacKay stepped up to swim with the boys to write a story she will be able to share for years to come. More success came with Kuga Heenan sweeping the pool with four first places and he heads off to challenge the best in the state, especially in the butterfly, a stroke he makes graceful and almost easy as he cleaves his way down his lane. He will be joined by Claudia Croatto who also made her way through to Melbourne. Claudia has a huge month ahead of her as immediately prior to the SSV finals she is heading to Queensland's Gold Coast to compete in the Australian Age Championships an amazing effort by all and we look forward to following their successes in the coming weeks.

SSV Athletics - Mr Jay Baker

The Mary MacKillop Athletics team ventured to the Leongatha Velodrome for the annual South Gippsland Carnival. The weather was kind and the students who represented the College displayed the type of school spirit which we strive toward. Determined, honest and selfless are examples of this with many students taking on heavy schedules as well as filling in for others at the last minute. Our girls won the aggregate shield for the best school and overall we finished third. A huge thank you to all competitors and staff who made the day a success. Overall we have 42 students who have qualified for the next round which is on September 5th at Newborough. A special mention to Audrey McGannon and Patrick Frayne who won the individual age champion on the day and to Harry Hoekstra who broke the South Gippsland High Jump record with a jump of 1.80m.
