Term 2 Week 4

Home Learning

English

This week students will write a Persuasive text using their learning and understanding of purpose, structure, language features and modality of this writing style.    First brainstorming and thinking about their ideas about a topic, then planning their arguments/reasons using the OREO model. Students will use a checklist and wordmat to support their language modality and persuasiveness.

This week we continue to use Picture Story Books as our focus for literature. This week our book,  'What if everybody did that' looks at cause and effect and shows the consequences of thoughtless behaviour.

To develop the reading comprehension strategies of thinking about the text, thinking within the text and thinking beyond the text  the students will work through optional literacy activities in  the 'What if everybody did that' Literacy Menu. Students are familiar with this format as they worked on literacy menus in term one in class.

This weeks mini lesson focuses on inferring and support with evidence. Inferring helps us to understand the author’s message even if the writer does not state it directly in the text. Students need to use their prior knowledge and clues from the text to infer what the author is trying to say.

Continuing with our Spelling / Reading rules in Word Study, this week we are introducing rule 3 - the letter 'g' MAY say its second sound /j/ when it is immediately followed by an e, i or y. For example, in the words 'gentle', 'gist' or 'gym'.  However, unlike last week's rule, this one has plenty of rule-breakers that we are sure the students will love to find, (e.g. give, gift, get).

All students should have received their login details for our new online book library, 'Epic'. At this stage, we are providing students free choice over the books available. Some books do have the capability of being audio-books, but always encourage your child to follow on with the words if they choose this feature.

Mathematics

Number and Algebra. This week students will look at the process involved in solving simple addition problems using a range of efficient written strategies. They will understand the importance of being confident with the use of mental strategies to support the computation  process and  use of the vertical algorithm for addition of two, three and four digit numbers without renaming.

Measurement and Geometry. Students will continue to explore their knowledge of the concept time and expand their understanding of reading this to the hour and half hour on an analogue clock. Children will view video clips and complete activities to enhance their skills and understandings.

Unit of Inquiry

This week students be looking at 'What is a community and 'who is a responsible citizen' with a focus on the related line of inquiry; Our responsibilities within our communities, and the concept of responsibility. They will understand that they belong to many communities, and within those communities they have a responsibility as a citizen to follow the rules and laws. Personalised activities identifying one's own communities will support the students in thinking about themselves in different contexts and the role they play within those communities.

Wellbeing

Each day students are to be reflective about their learning by completing one of the sentence starters on the daily planner link. This is an important part of their daily learning.

This week we invite students to choose a yoga card from the pack. Please read the preparation and safety requirements before commencing. Yoga is universally acknowledged as a powerful tool in developing balance, coordination, strengthening the body and relieving stress and fatigue. We strongly encourage all students to attempt the yoga activities. This task supports our aim to give students the opportunity to have moments of mindfulness and to keep a balanced approach to home learning which is of great importance to their wellbeing.
