VCAL Partnership with Sunshine Hospital

Continuing with our partnership with the Sunshine Hospital, we had a large team of Year 12 VCAL students create a functional, aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly outdoor terrace to enhance the facilities for those working, staying or visiting at the Hospital. The timeline for this partnership this year was much shorter than previous years but this did not impact the final outcome and the project was delivered on time.  The students designed and created a beautifully renovated outdoor terrace area for use by staff, visitors and guests.  This included designing and building large planter boxes, large scale wooden games and artwork.

They had artificial turf and some rubber flooring installed, painted the existing corrugated fibreglass sheeting and used a textured finish on the cement sheeting on the walls, breathing new life into a tired space.  The makeover is a credit to the team who worked on it and shows what can be achieved when community groups support one another.  Congratulations to all students and staff involved in this project, it was lovely to see the work of the students acknowledged during the presentation event at the Sunshine Hospital on 24 June.

The students gave a wonderful account of how they achieved the final product and an overview of what they had learned during the process, most of which were lifelong, transferable skills linked to problem solving and creativity. The students not only articulated an overview of their project but also their appreciation of their mentors at both the school and the hospital.

During this semester the students also took part in the opening of the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s section of the hospital and assisted with a Hospital fundraising event.  Well done to the VCAL team of staff and students.
