INTER BOYS CRICKET 2017
The Intermediate Boys Cricket Round Robin was held at Le Page Park in Cheltenham on Tuesday, February 22nd.
However, this year we had to qualify to be a part of the Round Robin. This involved a trip to Elwood to take on Elwood Secondary College, with the winner moving on. Each side had an hour to bat which turned out to be 14 overs. We batted first, making an excellent 2/112. Ben Geleit and Zac Morgan both retired once they made 20 runs, while Jake Bowey finished with 17 not out and Lachie Dight had 22 not out. When Elwood batted they found scoring difficult, but both their openers fought hard to reach retirement scores of 20. After that, some tight bowling left them on 3/58, well short of what they required. So the team moved on to the Round Robin.
The format is 10 overs batting per team and bowlers cannot bowl more than two overs, while batters must retire at 20 runs. So if you think 20/20 cricket is exciting, 10/10 is definitely even more thrilling with non stop action off every ball.
Our first game was against Albert Park Secondary College. We batted first, finishing with a respectable 5/72. Darius Dekker made retirement with a hard hitting 22. Zac Morgan also batted well for 17. They never really got going with the bat, struggling to 8/41. We fielded well and the bowlers were very impressive with a great line and length. Aidan Carr was the star with the ball, finishing with 3/7. So a commanding win in our first game.
Our final game was against Melbourne High School. They batted first. One of their openers smacked it around to the tune of fifteen off the first over. So our team was under the pump from the start. Their opener continued to bat well, batting through until reaching retirement. However, the bowlers found their confidence and really applied some great pressure to the rest of the batters. Wickets fell steadily throughout, but they still finished with a respectable 7/71. Zac Morgan was the pick of the bowlers with a miserly 1/4. We would have to bat well to get the runs. The openers came out with purpose and set about imposing themselves on the game. With some lusty hitting, both Darrius Dekker and James Rodwell quickly made it through to retirement, finishing with 23 and 22 respectively. A fantastic opening stand which set up the win in this game. We achieved the target with two overs to spare with Ben Geleit and Zac Morgan the not out batsmen.
A great effort by all the boys, resulting in Cheltenham being Beachside Division Champions for 2017.

SENIOR BOYS CRICKET 2017
The Senior Boys Cricket Round Robin was held at Le Page Park in Cheltenham on Thursday, February 16th.
They batted steadily, without really getting going, to finish with 4/56. We fielded well and the bowlers kept it relatively tight. Sam Roberts was the pick of the bowlers, bowling his two overs both for maidens, which was an amazing effort given the game format. Lusty hitting and quick singles were the order of our innings and we finished with 6/100 off our ten overs. Sam Roberts retired at 26 and Tynan Brazionis finished 15 not out. So a commanding win in our first game.
Our final game was against Melbourne High School. We had a bat first, finishing with 5/77, which was actually a good result as we didn’t have a lot of runs on the board after the first four overs. Andrew Trease opened and retired on 21 which was a great knock. Mason Goldin gave us a glimpse of what he is capable of with an impressive 19, while Sam Roberts got amongst the runs again with 17. A good score, but certainly achievable if Melbourne batted well. However, a superb bowling effort with a steady stream of wickets left them needing 27 off the last two overs. They were not quite up to the challenge, finishing on 7/67. Jack Reed picked up two wickets as did Tom McCarthy. A great effort by all the boys, resulting in Cheltenham being Beachside Division Champions for 2017.
