YEP Buddy Classes

YEP
Throughout this term the YEP students have been teaching lessons and workshops to the Year 7 cohort. The students have worked on creating lessons on topics that they believe are important the younger years should know about; physical health, drugs and alcohol, bullying and physical health. Students used the Staughton College lesson template, created Learning Intentions and Success Criterias, created warm ups, information tasks, main activities and reflections. Students also received feedback from the teachers and students of their Year 7 classes and responded to this in order to better themselves for the next lesson they would teach.
Physical Health:
“This was our last session with the Year 7s and it was focused on physical health. We took a look at the food pyramid and identified which products went into each section. We also did a quiz to see how healthy and un-healthy the students were. Then we took the students out to the basketball courts and quizzed them on some questions relating to physical health such as, “how many servings of grains we should eat a day” and then we had a light hearted game of ‘knock out.’ Overall the journey with the Year 7s has been a great learning curve and a wonderful experience.” Madi Davies 9.2
Drugs and Alcohol:
“We were teaching the Year 7s about drugs and alcohol. For our first activity we did a mix and match task where the students had to match the name, street name, picture and symptoms of a particular drug or alcohol in a group of 4. We watched a video and got the students to answer questions about particular scenes in the film. We finished off the lesson with a role play where the students practised saying no to taking drugs in a scenario and then presented this to the class. So at the end of the day we taught them that drugs are not good for you and how to assertive in saying no and not giving in to peer pressure.” Katherine Connell Year 9.
