Year 7

Year 7's at Work & at Play

The first few weeks of the term have flown by and the Year 7 classes are settling in very well at Fairhills.

For the first week the classes met their teachers in the courtyard and were taken off to their classes.  Now the students are feeling more at home and are able to follow their timetables and make their own way to class without becoming lost.

As the Year 7 Coordinator I have been most impressed by the students growing confidence and their enthusiastic attitude to their start to High School life.  It is lovely to see the students proudly wearing their new uniforms and becoming involved in their lessons and extra-curricular activities.

At the end of February we will be setting off to Phillip Island for our Orientation Camp. I'm sure it will be a great success and will be an opportunity for the students to make many lasting friendships.

What's new in Year 7 Science?!?

As the Year 7's come into High School they are always excited to go straight into subjects that do a lot of practicals!  One of the subjects that they can't wait to get into is Science!  Why is that you may ask?  Well, here are some of the questions I always get asked in my first lesson with Year 7s and the answers that I give them:

Q. Oh Ms are we going to BLOW something up?  A. Um...NO!

Q.  Bu we will be doing lots of experiments, right Ms?  A.  Yes

Q.  Oh Ms will be get to BURN things?  A.  Yes

As you can gues, there are some sad faces after the answer to the first question but always an excited "Yessssss" after the answer to the last two questions and the return of bright smiling faces!  This is always followed with "So are we doing an experiment today Ms?!?!"

Over the first few weeks of Science, students have concentrated on learning about basic Science equipment and safety in the Science Lab.  Last week they learned about one of the most important pieces of equipment in their Science education - The Bunsen Burner!

After a lesson on learning all the parts of the Bunsen Burner and the correct procedure of lighting one, they finally got their safety glasses on and became junior scientists.  It was truly such an enjoyable experience watching their smiling faces as some of them struck a match for the first time and then lit their Bunsen Burner.  My students never fail to put a smile on my face when they exclaim "Oh Ms, look, look, I did it! I lit it!"  Please join me in congratulating our Y7's in successfully receiving their Bunsen Burner Licences!
