MSC Kitchen Rules

Getting into the kitchen and cooking up a nutritious, healthy meal has been the challenge for the Year 11 Health and Human Development students as they competed in their own mini MSC Kitchen Rules.

Within their studies of Nutrition and Health, students have been exploring the functions of major nutrients for general health and wellbeing and considering the possible consequences of nutritional imbalance in youth’s diet.  As part of the ‘Kitchen Rules’ project, students were asked to research some healthy recipes and choose one to cook for themselves, and their families.  Students needed to evaluate the validity of food and nutrition information from a variety of sources, including the internet.  They were also encouraged to be mindful of marketing tactics of foods and the ways certain foods are promoted or targeted at the youth market and the impact this might have on youth health behaviours.  A range of factors; including social, cultural and political were explored and how these can influence the food practices and food choices made by youth.

The opportunity to jump into the kitchen was abuzz for not only the novice but also the experienced cooks within the three classes.  For those not normally acquainted with the kitchen environment, challenging themselves and having a go was a great experience.

For the accomplished cooks, the opportunity to show off their skills was relished and some truly delicious and nutritious meals were prepared and enjoyed.  The winners on the day were Jazz Dermody with a scrumptious asian dish and Shen Orteza with Dianne Baptist cooking a nutritious and yummy fried rice dish.  From this fun cook-off and what the students have learned in class it is hoped that home cooking will become part of their family routine and they can now contribute to healthy eating in the home as well as school.
