PYP Exhibition
The Year 6 PYP exhibition is in progress and our students are excited about the opportunity to share their learning with the School community. The Exhibition is the culmination of the PYP in the Primary School. The central idea for this year is creativity, imagination and innovation are tools for extending our ability to think and solve problems. We look forward to following the Year 6 students on their exhibition journey and delighting in their achievements at our combined Valedictory Service and Exhibition on the night of Monday 26 November.
For the first time, the Year 5 cohort will also share their learning of the same unit of inquiry with a ‘Night of Living Treasures’. Each student will present themselves as a notable figure through costume and the presentation of a biography. Further details will follow in coming weeks.
Primary Instrumental Concert
On Tuesday 30 October our talented Primary musicians and vocalists will showcase their progress over the year. This will include our new Primary ensembles, with the Vocals and Guitar group performing two items and the Vocals Ensemble singing a 12 song medley. There will also be many fine individual and small group performances. Please contact Primary Secretary, Donna Brown if you wish to attend this concert. Student performers have already received the relevant information.
Encounter Experiences
The Year 1s enjoyed a great day out at the Mundaring Wilderness Centre where they experienced indigenous culture with Dreamtime stories, sourcing bush food, throwing spears, making damper and eating kangaroo. Thank you to all Year 1 staff for giving up their extra time and Mel Forslun, Early Learning Centre Coordinator for organising the Year 1 Encounter Experience.
Our Pre-Primary students also had their Encounter Experience recently, with all students travelling to the Rio Tinto Naturescape Kings Park. This is a fantastic venue to investigate and explore. There are towers to climb, creeks to cross, tunnels to navigate and ropes to wrestle. Thank you to all Pre-Primary staff for organising a great experience for our younger children.
Wellness Day
On the first Monday of Term 4, all staff visited our Mother Church, St George’s Cathedral. The Very Reverend Richard Pengelly, Dean of Perth provided a wonderful service for John Wollaston staff. His message to us focused on the benefit of serving others. Over the coming years, we hope to make service learning a greater focus for our whole school community. There is substantial research indicating that the best way to make us feel better about ourselves is to help others. We want our students to not only feel good but do good. Further details will follow about initiatives in this area.
Disco
The next Primary School Disco will be held on Friday 26 October. The theme for this Disco is Onam, a harvest festival. A Pookalam display will be created in the BDISC. The Parents and Friends Association are looking for volunteers to help on the night. If you can spare some time, please email parentsandfriends@jwacs.wa.edu.au. I greatly appreciate the respect our school has for different cultures. The recognition of Onam, an annual harvest holiday and festival, is a shining example. Please encourage your children to attend a most enjoyable night with their friends.
Positive Psychology Conference
On Saturday 27 October, Fiona Shand, Senior Deputy Head of Primary and I will be conducting a seminar at the Positive Education Conference, held at Perth College in conjunction with the Positivity Institute. There is a parent stream for this conference, with the details below for your information.
