Positive Living Skills

Week 6:  Learning How to Relax

Check out the quick five tips below to help your child learn how to relax:

1. Take a Deep Breath:

  • Take one deep breath, counting to four as you breathe in.
  • Hold your breath and count to seven.
  • Exhale as you count to eight.
  • Repeat three or more times until you feel calm.

2. Engage in a Hobby:

Hobbies help you relax as they distract you from daily life and give you an outlet for your talents, interests and skills.

3. Exercise:

Exercise increases norepinephrine, a chemical that moderates your brain’s stress response and endorphins, the hormone that helps you feel good.  Children can ride their bike, play a game of sport, go for a swim or dance.

4.  Laugh:

A good laugh does wonders for your health. It reduces negative emotions, reduces stress and improves your quality of life.

5.  Meditation:

Listen to a guided meditation, repeat a meditative mantra, practice mindful meditation or utilize another form of meditation as you relax and calm your entire being.

Class Highlight: JS

JS have introduced a cooking program this term which has seen them whipping up a range of delicious dishes. The students have explored savoury foods such as scrolls, pizzas, wraps, macaroni & cheese, as well as sweet treats such as pancakes, rice crispies and choc-chip cookies. JS have been joined by other students during these sessions, which has been a great experience for everyone. The students have rated their food as “excellent” and “better than the food from the shops” so we look forward to developing the students’ skills further and sharing the results with more staff and students.
