Senior Formal - September 14
On Friday 14th September, 20 senior students attended the Edenhope Senior Formal at the Edenhope Football Club.
All of the students looked fantastic in their fancy dresses and suits. Thank you to Kings Katering for a beautiful three course meal and to everyone one who helped set up and pack up the room on the evening.
Making Biodiesel Year 9
As part of students' investigation into carbon chemistry and the carbon cycle, Year 9 students experimented with fermentation, making bread and using fruit juice to make wine. The students also made biodiesel to indicate that it's possible to make a fuel from a renewable source.
Mini Masterchef Challenge
Year 8
Last week, for their final lesson of the program, Technology – Foods, students participated in a Mini MasterChef challenge. In teams of 3 or 4, students designed, prepared, and presented a 2 course meal consisting of pizza and an apple dessert.
The Year 8 students worked collaboratively and enthusiastically to prepare their dishes under time constraints. Students challenged their abilities using their prior knowledge and skills, to produce amazing dishes, whilst displaying great teamwork.
It has been an absolute pleasure to see how much the students have grown in their maturity and confidence when preparing a wide range of ingredients throughout the term. Please encourage them to recreate the dishes they have made at school for you at home, or prepare the family meal regularly!
I look forward to seeing them continuing to develop their knowledge and skills in the Technology – Foods Elective program in 2019.

VCE Agriculture and Horticultural Excursion
On September 12, the VCE Agriculture and Horticulture students visited local farming properties. With the aim of identifying environmental degradation, sustainable practises and different farming methods. Most of the properties were in Victoria, but the group did cross the border into South Austrlaia, to visit Frances Strawberries.
Sharni and I visited the Frances Strawberry farm in December, 2017 owned by Adam and Sam Frost. The business has grown considerable over the past year. There were 12 rows of strawberries in 2017. In 2018 there are now 32 rows, each growing 512 plants. At the end of each year the strawberry plants are pulled out and used in compost. New plants are planted each year into I metre long, Besgrow Gropacs. Eight strawberry plants grow in packs with coconut husks. Water and the appropriated nutrients are fed into the packs through the watering systems. Biological pest control is used rather than chemicals, even though it is more expensive. The good bugs are bought in and sprinkled over the plants which help eradicate the mites, aphids and thrips. The flowers are cut off the new plants before the 1st Sept to enable the root system to develop.
The Frosts are in the final stages of building the new coffee shop on site. The building will have viewing windows and cater for luncheons. They are value adding to their original business with very little wastage of strawberries. A chef and more locals have been employed to cater for the coffee shop and to pick and package the strawberries.

School for Student Leadership 2019
Unfortunately Edenhope College has been unsuccessful in its application for the School for Student Leadership in 2019. 104 Government Secondary Colleges each year apply for the three campuses. With many more schools new to the program and returning schools realising the value for their students, the program has been oversubscribed.
Edenhope College has been priority listed for 2019 allocations. Our school is in on the waiting list. Sometimes selected school teams or individuals withdraw throughout the year and some or as many of the Edenhope College team as can be added, will be. I thank the Edenhope College students for their expression of interest for the program.
The proposed new School for Student Leadership campus at Yarra Junction is intended to open in 2020.

Advance Students - Community Service
Edenhope College Advance students helped the West Wimmera Shire Council to assist community members who were looking to build on their computer skills. It was part of an initiative organised by the shire’s Marnie Baker. Students mingled with community members, assisting them to log onto Ipads and even building music playlists. Thanks for the invite Marnie (who is also a parent at Edenhope College). Experiences like that are great for our college students who are only a couple of years off joining the workforce or heading off to Uni. It’s also part of their requirement to volunteer within our community, while working towards their Bronze, Silver & Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
